Vintage WWII FEUERHAND NR.323 Lantern Restoration
Vintage WWII Feuerhand Nr. 323 Lantern Restoration
The Feuerhand Nr. 323 kerosene lantern, produced by the Feuerhand company in Germany, became an iconic and reliable source of light during World War II. Founded in 1893, Feuerhand was renowned for its durable and efficient lantern designs, making the Nr. 323, also known as the "Baby Special," a staple for both civilians and military personnel. These lanterns were essential in providing bright, steady illumination in the absence of electricity, and their compact size and robust construction made them ideal for various applications. Today, they are cherished by collectors and restoration enthusiasts as historical artifacts that once brightened the darkest times of the war.
Three weeks ago, I visited my friend at the recycling station, who always has cool antique items to restore. This time, I saw a vintage WWII-era Feuerhand Nr. 323 kerosene lantern hung on the wall by a sack of rope because carrying handle was missing. It was covered in rust, dirt and the glass was Completely broken, clearly a barn find with numerous signs of wear and previous repairs. and the tank cap was also missing. Additionally, the tank had several visible holes, and I discovered that it had been soldered in the past. Covering the leakage of the tank was challenging for me, but I managed to do so successfully.
Despite the initial excitement, I soon discovered that the glass was broken—something I noticed only after repairing it thoroughly. Realizing that repairing the glass was impossible and unsafe, I decided to replace it with a new one of the same size. but unfortunately I can't find origenal glass,
I crafted a new handle to ensure the lantern remained functional and authentic. First I removed the Rust with electoliysis process, After carefully sanding all the parts with 260 grit sandpaper, I moved on to the painting process. I applied a fresh coat of paint, bringing out the classic charm of the lantern. The intricate text details were meticulously painted in red, adding a touch of vibrant color.
When the restoration was complete, I reassembled all the parts, and the lantern was ready for testing. Pouring kerosene oil into the tank, I watched as the lantern came back to life with a bright, steady flame. This restored piece not only serves as a beautiful decoration but also stands as a functional artifact from a significant historical era.
