Side View

This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 30-11-24 – 2’ is the second one of this month’s session. Also done in community center ‘De Blauwe Tram’ in Leidschendam. The first session I drew a front view of our male model. Automatically this means the people on the other side necessarily had a view on the back. The second session I didn’t felt this ambition had to fall on me. Therefor I moved my easle a bit to the right in order to get a side view of him. The composition of his sitting position offered me a rough one and a half square. A perfect padding of the paper I’d say. Strenghtened by the success of the first session I felt confident to spot for all midtones. Those I simply wouldn’t have to touch upon with my pastel chalks. He sat very still so I could study all the highlights on his body.

Dark Power Lines

So it became my second cubist drawing of this session. My first bit of cubism this evening I found to turn out just right. Hence I felt confident to have another go at it. Male bodies mostly look more angular anyway. Such was the case with his rib cage which took only three small diagonal rectangles to draw. The hair I kept quite simple. Only some highlighted planes next to some darker ones. The real kicker came in the end. The lighting in De Blauwe Tram is acceptable alright but not that great. That’s due to the fact we work in a group. You cannot focus a single light source on a body without blinding a participant on the other side of the room. Consequently I had to beef up the lighting by introducing some darker power lines. That did the trick and enforced the overal tonal impression.
