A Debutant
This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 30-11-24 – 1’ is the first of this month’s model session. Held in community center ‘De Blauwe Tram’ in Leidschendam once more. A perfect place we can use for our painting and drawing sessions, thanks to colleague Hélène. Initially we planned to have model Bo again but she couldn’t make it this time. She had a friend who was willing to pose for her instead. We never have had male models pose for us that frequently but we were delighted by his appearance and efforts. Not experienced with sitting and standing for artists like us though. However, we couldn’t tell the difference between an experienced model and our debutant. A job well done and thanks! A slender man too, like Jelco last month, although the latter was more muscular.
Salaì-like
The first pose we had him standing up on a little mattress. That’s why her friend Bo always wears socks. It wasn’t that cold to begin with. Lucky I was to have the front view and soon captured his almost angelic facial features. During the break I told him he almost looked like Salai, Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous pupil. This having said, I did the pastel in a totally non-Da Vince way. That would be my personal view on cubism. Well, a bit really. I had it in me to draw it only a bit edgy, focusing merely on the highlighted spots. These were located on his hair, chest, shoulder and belly. The midtones I didn’t have to draw. In fact these are the tone of the blue paper.
The Result
The result is rather minimalistic. Strange how you can experience a sort of tranquility during such a session. Proportions were easily captured. Enough time I had to do a lot of thinking about doing not that much. With regard to model sessions lately I feel more at ease anyway. To do only so much that the essence of a body is captured became my primary goal. One could say, there is more focus on keeping open structures from now on.
