French farmers are protesting against an impending free-trade agreement with the South American regional bloc Mercosur. The EU-Mercosur free trade deal has been in the works for about 25 years. The South American bloc hopes to finalise it soon. Most European nations are also on board. But France is against the deal because the country's farmers may be negatively impacted. French farmers feel that cheap agricultural products from South America will undercut their own produce, and led to the death of their livelihoods. Poland has joined France in opposing the free trade deal, but they still don't have the numbers to bloc it.
