I Suffered Female Genital Mutilation & Was Forced Into Marriage – Shamsa Araweelo

“I looked to the Side of the Cutter and she had a Jar with things in it, Clitoris, Labia – things she had cut previously, I looked at it and thought I’m going to die.”

Shamsa Sharawe was born in Somalia, where she was subjected to female genital mutilation aged 6 without any anesthesia or pain relief.

This is the horrifying, torturing, true story of Shamsa Araweelo – who survived Female Genitalia Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation is a practice that Pre-dates Christianity and Islam. It involves cutting the genitals.

There are 4 Types of Female Genital Mutilation:

1. Removal of the Clitoris

2. Removal the Clitoris and the Labia Minora - the inner folds of skin that surround the vaginal and urethral openings

3. *The Most Severe – When the Clitoris, Labia Minor & Labia Majora are Removed. The labia majora (outer lips) are usually fleshy and covered with pubic hair. The labia minora (inner lips) are inside your outer lips. They begin at your clitoris and end under the opening to your vagina.

4. Pricking, Scraping or anything that Modifies the Female Genitalia.

One of the practices is cutting off these genitalia parts and sowing them back on while the victim is still awake. An extremely horrifying and painful experience.

To do this to another human being is unimaginable. It is pure evil.

To imagine the terror that these victims had to endure is painful.

Shamsa was forced to marry her cousin at the age of 17.

As a result of undergoing FGM, Araweelo has had to deal with ongoing health problems, including severe menstrual pain and cysts.

In December 2023, she travelled to Germany and underwent reconstructive surgery.
