James Giles (1759–1825) was a distinguished figure in both military and civic spheres in New Jersey. Born in Burlington County, he began his military service during the Revolutionary War as a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Continental Artillery on January 13, 1777. He later served as Commissary of Military Stores to the Artillery in 1778 and was transferred to Lamb’s Regiment of Continental Artillery on July 21, 1779. In 1780, while attached to General Lafayette's command in Virginia, Giles was honored with a sword by Lafayette for his gallantry in action. He resigned from service on August 21, 1782. citeturn0search0

After the war, Giles studied law under Joseph Bloomfield and became an attorney and member of the bar in 1783. He served as the Clerk of Cumberland County, New Jersey, from 1788 to 1803. In 1793, he was commissioned as Brigadier General of the Cumberland Brigade of the New Jersey Militia, a position he held until 1805. Giles was also a Freemason and founder of Brearley Lodge #9 (now #2), serving as Warrant Master in 1791. He married Hannah Bloomfield on May 23, 1784. citeturn0search0
