In this presentation we discuss bank failures during the last 100 years. We analyze their causes and discuss how monetary and regulatory policy has contributed to them. We look at bank failures during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Savings and Loan Fiasco of the 1980s and 90s and the bursting of the Housing Bubble in 2007-08. We propose regulatory and monetary policy changes that could lead to a more stable banking system. We also discuss the causes of the failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in 2023 in some detail.

This presentation was made at the Association of Private Enterprise Education (APEE) meeting in Las Vegas, NV on April 9, 2024.
