How bad is tipping getting? Slim asks the web

Went to Subway and they had one of those automated tip screens pop up not sure if this was a new thing decided to research the web man I'm not alone this auto tipping is nuts. I only carry cash so mostly doesn't apply but I normally always leave a tip.
Question for those big chains and places for the auto tip option do the servers actually get the amount left by the customer.
