Searching for Happiness: How the Search for Happiness Can Make You Unhappy

Happiness is a widely discussed topic, often accompanied by phrases like “As long as you’re happy.” While striving for happiness isn’t inherently wrong, an excessive focus on just trying to be happy can be counterproductive. In fact, it’s one of the common happiness myths—the idea that constantly chasing happiness will make us fulfilled. Ironically, this relentless pursuit often leads to frustration and keeps us from experiencing true inner peace and wellbeing.

Instead of fixating on whether we feel happy in the moment, we should shift our focus to meaningful actions and choices. Psychology shows that building purpose and connection in our lives ultimately leads to the happiness we seek, but as a byproduct, not the primary goal.
