Syrian rebels enter Aleppo

The rapid advance of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other rebel groupings began three days ago. This is the first major turn in the conflict in the country since 2020.

With russia apparently unable to provide sufficient support for the regime of Bashar al-Assad, the militants captured more than 50 settlements in northwestern Syria in the last three days.

Today, militants filmed by residents of Aleppo appeared on social media on the western outskirts of the city - it is reported that fighting is already underway there, in a sign of russian weakness.

According to some reports, the rebels are moving towards the center of Aleppo, with Assad's forces said to be retreating or abandoning their positions and leaving their equipment behind.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is an alliance of militant groups active in Syria. The group, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra, which served as al-Qa`ida’s local affiliate in Syria, retains a Salafi-jihadist ideology despite its public split from al-Qaeda in 2017
