The Fall of Caen 1944

The Battle of Caen (June–August 1944) was a pivotal confrontation during the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War II. Part of Operation Overlord, the battle aimed to secure the city of Caen, a strategic objective critical for Allied forces to advance south and consolidate their position in France. British and Canadian troops faced fierce resistance from the German 7th Army and SS Panzer divisions, leading to intense fighting marked by air bombardments, urban warfare, and tank battles. The Allies initially struggled to capture the city due to well-fortified German defenses and counterattacks. However, after a series of coordinated offensives, including Operations Charnwood, Goodwood, and Totalize, Caen was fully liberated by mid-August. The battle was costly, with significant casualties on both sides and extensive destruction to the city, but it played a key role in weakening German forces and enabling the broader Allied advance.
