Episode 35 - The choke that shocked the world

Robert Drysdale is a retired mixed martial artist, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) world champion and coach.

Robert is perhaps most famous for his historic victory over the legendary Marcelo Garcia in 2007 ADCC, a match in which he famously tapped out Garcia, cementing his status as one of the top grapplers of his generation. Marcelo Garcia, a multiple-time BJJ World Champion, had been considered nearly untouchable at the time, which made Drysdale’s victory all the more impressive and a defining moment in his career.

In addition to his success on the mat, Robert transitioned into a successful career in mixed martial arts (MMA), competing in various organizations such as the UFC, and building a reputation for his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu-based fighting style. His MMA career, while not as long as his time in the grappling world, showcased his adaptability and prowess as a martial artist.

Outside of competition, Robert is also an accomplished author and coach. He’s written insightful works on the philosophy and techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the author of the best-seller Opening Closed Guard, about the origins and history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

He has also dedicated himself to teaching and growing the sport, with his own academy where he trains athletes from around the world. Known for his methodical approach to grappling and his dedication to refining technique, Robert Drysdale’s impact on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA is still felt today.
