"You're really bad at this, huh?" Illusion Islands has revealed the trailer for the mystery romance comedy thriller (all in one!) film titled The Private Eye, marking the featuring directorial debut of filmmaker Jack Cook. Set for release in theaters in early February, though it won't make much of an impact. Help solve the mystery... In The Private Eye, Mort Madison's life is spiraling downward, when a beguiling, slightly familiar woman hires him for his most unusual case – to spy on David, whom he believed was her lover. But he falls for her, too... The film stars Matt Rife as Mort Madison, with Clare Grant, Elliot, Denzel Whitaker, Lexy Panterra, Charles Worth, Erik Griffin, Eugenia Kuzmina, & Eric Roberts. Ooph, this is not a great trailer for a film that does not look good at all. Avoid this one and go watch The Kid Detective instead.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jack Cook's The Private Eye, from Illusion Islands' YouTube:

The Private Eye Poster

Private investigator Mort Madison (Matt Rife) has seen his better days. A mysterious woman, Michelle (Clare Grant) hires him to spy on David (Elliot), whom he believed to be her lover. In the detective process Mort himself falls in love with Michelle, then decides the only way he can be with her is by eliminating David from the equation. Mort hopes this will entice Michelle to run away with him and live happily ever after only to reveal a mind-blowing twist. The Private Eye is directed by American indie filmmaker Jack Cook, making his feature directorial debut after many shorts and co-directing The Elevator previously. The screenplay is written by Jack Cook, Patrick Roe, Rosalinda Books, and Hope Ayiyi. It's produced by Stream Gardner and Hope Ayiyi. This hasn't premiered at any film festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Illusion Islands will debut Cook's The Private Eye in select US theaters starting February 9th, 2024 coming soon.

Matthew Steven Rife[1] (born September 10, 1995)[2] is an American comedian and actor. From the town of North Lewisburg, Ohio, Rife is best known for his self-produced comedy specials Only Fans (2021), Matthew Steven Rife (2023) and Walking Red Flag (2023), his 2023 Netflix specials Natural Selection and Lucid, as well as his previous recurring role on the sketch improv comedy and rap show Wild 'n Out.

Early life
Matt Rife was born in the town of North Lewisburg, Ohio,[3] and grew up in North Lewisburg.[1] He also lived in New Albany and Mount Vernon.[4] Rife first took an interest in comedy at 13 years old. His grandfather was the one that got him into comedy; they would watch comedies together and his grandfather was very supportive of him. [5] He started performing professionally two years later at 15. [6] He has four siblings: three older stepsisters and one younger half-sister.[7]

Career
In 2017, Matt Rife was a host on the short-lived reboot of Total Request Live and appeared on MTV's The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars.[8][9] In 2018 he played a role in the B-movie slasher film Black Pumpkin.[10] Rife is also a paranormal investigator featured on the YouTube channel "Overnight".[11][12][13][14] He was further featured on the television series Bring the Funny in 2019,[15] where he advanced to the Semi-Final Showcase but was eliminated in week 8, and the Netflix special Natural Selection.

Rife has self-produced comedy specials Only Fans (2021), Matthew Steven Rife (2023), and Walking Red Flag (2023).[15] He also had guest roles on the sketch comedy and improv game show series Wild 'n Out, as Brandon Bliss on the comedy television series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and as Logan on the sitcom television series Fresh Off the Boat.[16] The New York Times described him in 2022 as "just another struggling road comedian" who then became more popular from TikTok over the following year.[17]

In December 2022, Rife signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA).[18] In April 2023, he released a self-titled special Matthew Steven Rife on Valentine's Day.[19] He then released another special in June 2023 titled Walking Red Flag, focusing on crowd-work. Rife states that he created an entire special surrounding the topic of audience "red flags" in order to stop audiences from interrupting his future sets with the bit.[20]

On November 15, 2023, Rife released his Netflix standup special Natural Selection.

Influences
Rifes biggest influence was his grandpa, Rife has said his other influences in comedy are Dave Chappelle, Ricky Gervais, and Dane Cook. Rife performed at Dave Chappelle's 50th birthday show at Madison Square Garden and has called Chappelle a mentor.[21][22] He has also said Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey, Jim Varney, David Spade, Pauly Shore, and Robin Williams are people he found influence from.[23]

Personal life
Rife currently resides in Rhode Island.[24] Rife briefly dated English actress Kate Beckinsale in 2017 and 2018 while Beckinsale was still married.[25][26] In 2023, he dated actress Lucy Hale.[27] In the summer of 2023, he began dating English actress Jessica Lord.[28][29] The couple broke up in March 2024.

Rife mentioned in his comedy special Only Fans (2021) that he had clinical depression and an anxiety disorder.[30]

Rife identifies as a Christian but is not religious,[31] in an Instagram post saying that "I wear a Jesus cross around my neck for the same reason regular dudes wear NBA player basketball jerseys — I’ve never met the guy, but I tell people I can dunk like him at LA Fitness."[32]

The Watchers is a 2024 American supernatural horror fantasy film written for the screen and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan in her directorial debut, produced by M. Night Shyamalan, and based on the 2021 novel by A. M. Shine.[5][6] It stars Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouéré and Oliver Finnegan, and follows Mina, a 28-year-old artist who becomes trapped in a vast, untouched forest in the west of Ireland. Seeking shelter, she becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are stalked by mysterious creatures every night.

The Watchers was released theatrically in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on June 7, 2024. The film received negative reviews from critics and grossed $33 million worldwide.

Plot
The film opens with a man in a forest. He gets lost and appears to be killed when he is dragged underground. At a pet shop in Galway, an American named Mina is asked to deliver a golden conure parrot to a zoo near Belfast. Her car breaks down in a forest. As she tries to find her way, she encounters a bunker and a woman who tells her to get inside if she wants to live.

The woman, Madeline, is living in The Coop with Ciara and Daniel. Shortly after nightfall, they all assemble in front of the Coop's mirrored window for "The Watchers". Madeline tells Mina that the Watchers will enjoy meeting her and that she will be safe if she follows the rules: The Watchers kill anyone outside the Coop at night. Nobody must enter the Burrows, the underground tunnels where the Watchers retreat during the day because of their aversion to sunlight.

The group has been stranded in the forest for several months. Ciara's husband John left the Coop days earlier but has not returned. Daniel helps Mina explore a Burrow, where she unearths several items like a camcorder and a bicycle and narrowly escapes a Watcher. That night, John appears at the Coop. Madeline refuses to let him in. She is convinced it is a Watcher imitating John. The Watchers crack the mirror in anger. Madeline returns the items to the Burrow to appease them.

As winter falls, the group begins to turn hostile against one another. Daniel locks Mina and Madeline out of the Coop one night, forcing them to seek shelter in the forest. They witness the Watchers, humanoid creatures that imitate the Coop's occupants and react angrily to Madeline and Mina's absence. The pair get back into the Coop and Madeline explains that the Watchers are shapeshifting fairies attempting to learn how to better mimic humans. The Watchers attack the Coop. The group retreats through a hidden door to an underground study. Mina uncovers Professor Rory Kilmartin's video diaries. Kilmartin had come to the forest to study the fairies. He captured one of them and bonded with it. In his last entry, the despondent professor explains how to escape from the forest and requests that his research be destroyed. He goes upstairs and shoots his captive and then himself.

The next day, the group follows the professor's directions to a river at the edge of the forest. Madeline shows them a stone marker where the fairies were imprisoned without their wings after a war with humans. A Watcher mimicking John kills Daniel. The others take the Professor's boat back to civilization.

Mina visits the professor's university office to destroy his notes. She learns humans and fairies once lived in harmony, with some even producing hybrid offspring that could withstand daylight. She is horrified to learn that Madeline looks like the Professor's wife who died in 2001. She realizes Madeline is a fairy.

At Ciara's, they are attacked by Madeline. She explains she was outcast by the Watchers because she could endure sunlight. Mina convinces Madeline to spare her life by explaining she is half-human. Mina implores Madeline to let go of her hatred towards humans and find other hybrids. Madeline sprouts wings and flies away.

Mina reconciles with her estranged twin sister and explains that Madeline is now a kind of guardian for her. The film ends on Madeline in the form of a young girl in a crowd.

Production
In February 2023, New Line Cinema announced it would produce The Watchers, written and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan in her feature directorial debut.[7] That April, Dakota Fanning and Georgina Campbell joined the cast.[8][9] Principal photography took place in Dublin, Wicklow and Galway from July to September 2023.[10][11] In mid-July, production was granted an interim agreement to continue filming during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[10] The film was self-financed by Ishana's father, M. Night Shyamalan, and sold to Warner Bros. for $30 million.[12]

The topic of nepotism was raised throughout the film's press tour because of Ishana's industry connection.[13][14][15] In an interview, she said, "It's something that I consider and have considered every day in the process. I was very afraid of what those implications would be and if I would be judged. Having something to prove when you walk into a room and a space is never a bad thing and makes you work harder and makes you want it more."[13] In another interview, she said discussions around nepotism were "totally valid", that what was important was the "reaction to the privilege", and: "By nature of being born into this life and having a parent in the industry, there's definitely a sort of advantage stepping into the field, you just have that sense of being able to achieve it – I think as with any child pursuing their parent's field."[14]

Release
The Watchers was theatrically released in the United States, United Kingdom and Ireland on June 7, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures.[16] The release was briefly shifted to June 14 before returning to its original date.[7][17] It was titled The Watched in the United Kingdom and Ireland.[1]

Reception
Box office
The Watchers grossed $19.1 million in the United States and Canada, and $13.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $33 million.[2][18]

In the United States and Canada, The Watchers was released alongside Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and was projected to gross around $8–10 million from 3,350 theaters in its opening weekend.[19] The film made $2.9 million on its first day (including $1 million from Thursday night previews) and went on to gross $7 million from its opening weekend, finishing in fourth.[12][2][18]

Critical response
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 32% of 176 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.9/10. The website's consensus reads: "Heavy on eerie mood but undone by an obtuse script, The Watchers can only hold the gaze for so long before tedium sets in."[20] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 46 out of 100, based on 38 critics, indicating "mixed or average" reviews.[21] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C–" on an A+ to F scale, while those polled by PostTrak gave it a 55% overall positive score, with 36% saying they would definitely recommend the film.[12]

Several critics negatively compared Shyamalan's style to her father's.[a] Dylan Roth of The Observer commended the Shyamalan family for "never obscuring the nepotism at play" during the press tour, but wrote, "The Watchers did not convince me of much. Worse, it is precisely what I'm sure the young director hoped it wouldn't be—a pale imitation of her father's patented style."[15] In a similarly negative but contrasting review, Bob Strauss of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "There's an inelegant blend of Celtic folklore thriller ... [and] contemporary horror movie tropes that renders the result unsatisfying for fans of either genre. And yet, Shyamalan proves herself a proficient director throughout most of this slog."[26] RelishMix, which analyzes activity across social media platforms to summarize the public's general responses to a film's marketing, said it received 9% more attention than "first installment horror norms" but that "negative convo on The Watchers is limited to those turned off by M. Night Shyamalan's involvement as a producer after being dissatisfied with many of his past cinematic ventures."[12]

In a mixed review for AV Club, Katie Rife concluded, "The Watchers is clearly a first film, with the promise and the problems that come with it."[27] Michael Phillips's review for Chicago Tribune, rated three out of four stars, stated that Shyamalan "works well with cinematographer Eli Arenson to envelop the chamber-sized ensemble in various shades of dread, or comfort."[28] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave the film 2.5/5 stars, writing, "The Watchers starts on an extremely promising note. But only a small fraction of the anticipation that it raises is satiated. Be that as it may, there is just enough in the shadows that the director creates to make sizeable chunks of the film watchable, even immersive."[29]

Matt Rife has seen his stand-up comic career skyrocket, and his popularity should help the prospects of his latest feature “Trapped Inn.” Rife is a member of an American cycling team that are holed up in a historic lodge in the remote mountains of Europe. Check out the trailer and let us know what you think!

Trapped Inn – Quiver Distribution
Written and directed by Leah Sturgis, “Trapped Inn” is described as a sci-fi, mystery, and thriller! There are hints of possible aliens in the trailer, but my guess is that is not the problem.

“Trapped Inn” – Quiver Distribution
Members of the cycling team have died under mysterious circumstances, and Connor (Matt Rife) and Greg (Robert Palmer Walkins) are the alpha males fighting for survival. Rounding out the ensemble are Rickey Eugene Brown and Jalen Moore.
The movie is currently not rated and it has an 80 minute running time. “Trapped Inn” hits Digital on November 22, and we’ll be reviewing this film on CinemAddicts.
