Before we kick off this 2nd Annual Christmas Special, The Veterans of Hill 30 want to start this show with a PSA with a lead in from Erick, your host of SGT Rock’s Headbangers Ball. Take it away, man.

“Hey Hard Rockers and Headbangers. My Brothers on the Hill here and I had a heavy conversation about our time in the Army and the Christmas Season as NCOs. First, We hope that Santa brings your families everything they put on their Christmas wish list! We’ve got a great show with something for everyone at this year’s 2nd Annual Christmas show!

Buddy checks. Whether you’re an active-duty Soldier, Marine, Coast Guardsman, Airmen, National Guardsman, Reservist or Guardian, veteran or a worker bee out there in the world. No matter where you are. From the penthouse to the street. We here at Hill 30 are praying that the Good Lord is keeping you and yours safe. Christmas is a time to be celebrated, it is a time to remember that Jesus Christ was sent to the world and to gather with our loved ones, both family and friends, and keep the Spirit of Christmas alive. Spending time with our families the night before. Watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. Caroling. Meeting at Church for Midnight Mass, and then our exhausted 4th points of contact returned to the house to wait for Santa Claus to bring us the gifts we put on lists us kids left for ole St. Nick in the mailboxes with an address to his AO at the Nordpolen. (North Pole). The next morning was an all Norge (Norwegian) traditional breakfast food (my Pops always prayed for the blessing), followed by the opening of gifts, and spending the day with the family as the women and girls all put together a massive dinner spread. Different times from today, that’s for sure! Christmas football games, nappin after stuffin ourselves more than we did during Thanksgiving, and as parents slept, us kids were outside in the freezing weather workin’ off the fuel from the day’s feast. Great memories of a better time.

Fast forward to my time in the Army…The Single Soldier in the barracks is the NCO’s greatest priority during the time of the Christmas season is when the Army’s highest rate of suicide occurs. My job, as an NCO, married at the time, was to get soldiers out of those barracks and let them know, “Hey, I was in your shoes once, man. I know how hard it can be hard. This world is a better place with you in it. Come and hang out with the frau and I. We’ll feed ya and party with ya. We’ll start pickin’ you guys up NLT 1800. Everyone’s staying at the house, we have the room. It was very cool, having this huge Christmas party at Patrick Henry Village outside of Sandhausen, Germany. To me, during the critical holidays, I wasn’t SGT Benhardtson, I was just Erick. Hosting those huge house/block parties reminded me of the parties we’d had with my very large family back on the homestead in Minnesota.

Yet, my mind always wandered to that one troop, alone, in some barracks, putting on the good face, yet one thought away from taking their own life somewhere in the world. In my line of work in the Army, I can tell you of the 12 Christmas Seasons, whether back in garrison or downrange. I only got to enjoy three of them. The other nine, well. Let’s just say we were very busy. I still remember their names, faces, and how they left us. If only their NCO would have been there for them. If only someone was there for them.

I pray and I want each one of you watching this show to pray (even if you don’t believe in God, just do us a solid this one time, alright. It ain’t gonna fuckin kill ya!) that a single servicemember and civie watches this show, and they know, that you and a team of GenX NCOs from the days of God’s flannel and jungle boots who spent his time in the shit walked a mile in their boots, and were able to get out of that foxhole grave they dug, gives every fuck of their fields of fucks and donates them to that lonely troop or civie so they can pass on the “I give a a fuck about you! Buddy Check to someone else. Paying it forward in a positive way! If a soldier does give a fuck about you, you’re in good hands! Alright, we give a fuck about you. We want you to live a life that was given to you by The Creator. He may not take you home today, He’ll do that when he wants to. You, you just stick around and live every fuckin minute like it’s your last. Alright? You are loved. You are important. You are our family. You are not alone!!!!!

During this Christmas Season, ladies and gentlemen, conduct a buddy check. Check on your family, friends, and those you think may be at risk. Christmas is supposed to be a time of celebrating the birth of Christ. Make the call, save a life. If you’ve read this far, thank you. Our soldiers and the lonely during the Christmas Season need you, our lonely souls, whatever age they may be. Need you. Just thinking about an ole widower vet missing his wife and family in a home or an ole widow, missing her servicemember in the same boat. Gah! I wish I could be in a million places at once sometimes.

And now that I’m out. I am very thankful for my family, and BrothersFromOtherMothers I made while in the Army. We might not see each other every Christmas, we might not sit down and break bread. But they’re just a phone call, a text, Zoom or Teams Call away. Hell, an XBOX Live Party chat away.

Yet…my mind always wonders, is there a lonely soldier out there in the world, writing his or her last letter to their parents, wives, husbands, kids, and family? All I can do is pray that they don’t end up as a headline in Stars and Stripes or their local newspaper for a permanent decision caused by a temporary problem. Take care of each other out there, Hard Rockers and Headbangers, Veterans and Civies. We, the Veterans of Hill 30 love every one of you. Make the call. Save a Life.
