This is WHY You HATE People: Sartre' NO EXIT.
#JeanPaulSartre #Existentialism #NoExit
Jean-Paul Sartre’s line, “Hell is other people,” originates from his play No Exit, where three characters are condemned to spend eternity together in a single room. Surprisingly, their torment isn’t physical but psychological, stemming from their interactions and constant judgment of one another.
Sartre’s existential philosophy underpins this idea. He argued that humans are “condemned to be free,” bearing full responsibility for their choices. This freedom often leads to discomfort, as we seek validation from others rather than embracing self-authenticity. In No Exit, the characters reflect each other’s insecurities and guilt, becoming both judges and mirrors.
The phrase doesn’t mean that people are inherently unbearable but highlights the anguish of being seen and judged. It reveals how dependence on others for identity traps us, creating a personal form of hell.
