In this episode of The Incomplete Skeptic, I want to address the 12 Steps and use the idea of Grace as a touchstone; in God's Economy, nothing is wasted. Grace as Acceptance.

We talk a lot about ACCEPTANCE in recovery, but do we practice this principle in ALL our affairs? Do we judge each other as addicts or alcoholics? Are we doing to each other what the world used to do to us, and is part of the reason we used "Anonymous" in the name of our beloved organization?

Of course, the irony is that many people in The Program, unable to accept the word "Addict" in the title of the chapter addressing Acceptance (3rd Edition), waited for Dr. Paul, who wrote it, to die and then changed the title to "Acceptance" in the Fourth Edition. If we erase history, we'll lose the origins, and the roots might die. I suggest having a Side-By-Side edition of the Big Book, where the original script is always in the front, and subsequent editions follow it. Both the original and current editions should be in one book.

To this point of separation consciousness between Addicts/Alcoholics and "Acceptance", an Addict wrote: "I think he was saying that addicts/alcoholics were here too and that the "pure grapes" needed to accept that and shut up because they only show their character defects when they don't! (attitudes of intolerance)."

This objection to intolerance is a clear example of intolerance. "Pure Grapes" is diminutive, condescending, and certainly lacking 'acceptance.' My observation is not a judgment. We're all doing the best we can with what we have. When I complain about myself or you, I complain about God's handiwork. In God's Economy, nothing is wasted.

I am doing what I always do in The Incomplete Skeptic. I offer opportunities to question one's convictions. The Set-Aside Prayer concept governs my life. It keeps me from playing God. Every belief I hold has a question mark behind it.

I hope you like some of the concepts I cover. It was not well-planned, but I've been dwelling on them more and more these days due to so many people who seem to be losing their cool over issues social, political, medical, and mystical.
