Turner, who has served in the U.S. Navy for 16 years, arrived early Saturday at Coleman after a nine month deployment to Guantanamo Bay.

She decided a month ago to plan the surprise (not even cluing in her husband) and Tuscaloosa City Schools staffers rose to the occasion to make it happen.

Turner said Steven's graduation is a "proud moment" for the entire family. He surprised her in high school, she said, showing commitment to his school work he didn't have when he was younger.

"He used to play a lot in school, and I asked him why he was satisfied with Cs," Turner said. "But he got in high school and made the honor roll. He told me that it felt good, being honored. I told him he could keep doing that."

After that, Turner said, he didn't want anything but an A.

Steven now has a scholarship
