After Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, the administration of current President Joe Biden focused on helping Ukraine. This includes returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine, according to The New York Times.
As reported, the United States is currently aiming to maximize aid to Ukraine. In particular, there has even been a proposal to return nuclear weapons to Ukraine.
President Joe Biden has already authorized Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles for strikes on Russian territory. Additionally, it was confirmed that Ukraine will receive US-made anti-personnel mines.
The Biden administration seeks to provide Ukraine with as much assistance as possible before Trump takes office. This includes $7 billion in weapons and ammunition from Pentagon stockpiles and an additional $2.1 billion for procuring new weapons from US defense contractors.
The Pentagon said that the ban on the deployment of US military contractors in Ukraine to help the Ukrainian Armed Forces maintain and repair the weapons systems provided had been lifted. This refers to both the repair of F-16 fighters and Patriot air defense systems. These specialists will operate far from the front lines and won’t participate in combat. Contracts with these contractors are planned to be signed before Biden leaves office.
According to media reports, some US officials have suggested that Biden might return nuclear weapons to Ukraine that were taken from it after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
"That would be an instant and enormous deterrent. But such a step would be complicated and have serious implications," The New York Times reports.
Some officials believe that even with additional aid, it will be difficult for Ukraine to regain the territories seized by Russia, the New York Times reports.
Other experts point out that the acceleration of Ukraine's arming in the final months of the Biden administration could help Ukraine enforce a ceasefire or truce if a settlement is reached. Andriy Zagorodnyuk, former Minister of Defense of Ukraine, said in an interview that for a successful ceasefire, Ukraine and its allies must change the momentum on the front line to create conditions for negotiations.
Ukraine should also have sufficient firepower in reserve to deter any violations of the ceasefire, the article says. For example: an arsenal of long-range weapons to inflict immediate damage if Russia resumes hostilities.
The Ukrainian army has withstood more than two and a half years against a larger, more powerful enemy, Zahorodniuk reminded.
Another important factor is an invitation to join NATO. But this was not achieved under Biden. The New York Times writes that an invitation is unlikely during Trump's presidency.
