By Catherine Yang 11/24/2024 Updated: 11/24/2024 White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Anne Neuberger, deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, hosted a meeting with telecom executives on Nov. 22 to share intelligence after reports emerged that several networks had been hacked. The Wall Street Journal was the first to confirm that major telecom companies such as AT&T and Verizon were the target of a large-scale cyberattack that was part of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-backed "Salt Typhoon" campaign. Hackers reportedly had access to the network for months or longer. "The meeting was an opportunity to hear from leaders in telecommunications on how the U.S. government can partner with the private sector and help it brace itself against sophisticated nation-state attacks," White House officials said in a statement. Both industry and U.S. officials have pointed out that while the CCP takes a whole-of-government approach in its cyberattacks on U.S. institutions, the targets are individual private companies that have no mechanism to share information across industries or with the government. On November 13, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) jointly declared that the CCP's cyber efforts against the United States are a "comprehensive and significant cyber espionage campaign" and urged victims to contact local FBI offices. Last month, Vice President-elect JD Vance confirmed that his phone
had been hacked by Chinese hackers, and he said he believed
President-elect Donald Trump's phone had also been hacked. Vance
said on "The Joe Rogan Experience," a podcast, that authorities
believed the hack was part of the Chinese state-backed Salt Typhoon campaign.
US lawmakers and intelligence officials have raised alarms about
several large-scale CCP-backed cyberattack campaigns.
In addition to the Salt Typhoon cyberespionage operation, officials have long warned about the China-backed Volt Typhoon threat group, which intelligence agencies say targets critical infrastructure in the Western world and has already compromised organizations in the energy, transportation and wastewater sectors. Authorities also identified a Flax Typhoon campaign that targeted consumer devices and installed malware to create a botnet that could launch further attacks. The FBI managed to disrupt that network and disable the malware. Intelligence officials also warned that the CCP-backed campaigns were "inconsistent with traditional cyberespionage or intelligence operations." In the case of Volt Typhoon, officials believe hackers are positioning themselves in critical IT networks to monitor and disrupt them in the event of a conflict. Following these telecom breaches, lawmakers have called for confidential meetings with telecom executives and intelligence officials to increase private-public cooperation on the issue.

Two Bee Gees drummers die within days of one another

Colin Petersen, the original drummer for Bee Gees, died aged 78.
Petersen joined the band in 1966 alongside brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. He performed on their second studio album Spicks and Specks, released that same year, and played on early hits such as To Love Somebody, I've Gotta Get a Message to You and I Started a Joke.
Born in Kingaroy, Queensland in 1946, Petersen found early fame as a child actor starring in the title role of the 1956 Australian film Smiley. He drummed with Bee Gees until 1969, when disagreements with the band's manager Robert Stigwood led him to leave and form the short-lived band Humpy Bong with singer-songwriter Jonathan Kelly and Tim Staffell.
Petersen was later replaced by Geoff Bridgford, although the band soon decided to employ touring drummers instead of full-time members, settling on Dennis Bryon, who would drum during the band's imperial phase from 1973 until 1980.Frederick Colin Petersen was an Australian drummer, record producer and child actor. Dennis Ronald Bryon was a Welsh rock drummer from Cardiff, best known for his work with the Bee Gees from 1974 to 1980. Bryon and Ringo Starr are the only drummers to have had five songs in the top ten of the Billboard charts at the same time. Bryon was the drummer for Amen Corner before joining the Bee Gees.

"(If Paradise Is) Half as Nice" is a popular song from 1968 that originally written by the Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Battisti for La Ragazza 77, alias Ambra Borelli, in 1968 as "Il paradiso della vita" ("The Paradise of Life") and later in 1969 for Patty Pravo as "Il Paradiso" (" Paradise"). The song was translated into English by Jack Fishman. When it was offered to the Tremeloes as a possible single, they turned it down. Dave Clark 5 also wanted to record it and they recorded the song. It was also recorded by Amen Corner as the debut single for their new Recorded by Immediate Records and produced by Shel Talmy, it is the most successful of the band's six hit singles, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in February 1969 and number 34 when re-issued in 1976. The band, which was formed in late 1966, was named after The Amen Corner, a weekly record deal at the Victoria Ballroom (later The Scene Club) in Cardiff, Wales, where Dr. Rock would play every Sunday evening soul music from the United States was played. Initially they specialized in a blues and jazz-oriented style, but were steered by their record companies towards a more commercial sound. Their first hit was a rendition of "Gin House Blues". Their first singles and album were released on Decca's subsidiary label Deram, but they left the band in late 1968 to join Immediate,[5] for which they had a No. 1 in early 1969, "(If Paradise Is) Half as Nice", followed by another top 5 entry with the Roy Wood composition "Hello Susie".
