Last week when Tom MacDonald and Nova Rockafeller released a new song called Wild Horses, it reminded me of this classic written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, but first released by The Flying Burrito Brothers on their 2nd album "Burrito Deluxe" in 1970.

That was the last album that group leader Gram Parsons worked on, as he was fired from the group shortly after its release for erratic drug-fueled behavior. Sadly, those drugs soon cut short the life of one of the founders of the Country Rock genre at age 26.

Gram had played with the Byrds on their Sweetheart of the Rodeo album, which was one of the first attempts to merge Rock and Country. He was fired from that group as well as he preferred to spend more time hanging out with Mick and Keith than he did touring with the group.

He then founded the Burrito Brothers with another Byrds refugees Chris Hillman. They then added Sneaky Pete Drake on pedal steel guitar and a new sound was born. On this particular recording you can also hear session piano man Leon Russell tickling the ivories.

The Stones eventually release their version of the song a year later, but most people agree, nobody did it better than Gram! Here is a link to the video version I used to which I added captions:
