Uruguay’s voters choose their next president in a close runoff

Uruguayans voted in the second round of the presidential election on Sunday, with conservative candidate Álvaro Delgado and left-wing candidate Yamandú Orsi in a close race.

Turnout was high at 89.4%.

Delgado, supported by the governing coalition, promises to continue pro-business policies and focus on tough-on-crime measures.

Orsi, from the Broad Front, advocates a community-oriented approach to crime and policies for social reform. Both candidates pledge cooperation if elected.

The election remains tight, with undecided voters potentially determining the outcome, the Associated Press has reported.
