Capehart: While Left Is Accused of Indoctrinating Children in Schools, the Right Is Forcing Religion in Schools

CAPEHART: “We have been teasing this Christian nationalist thing that’s happening in Texas, where Texas children could be studying the Bible in school alongside the three Rs. Maria, you’ve done some reporting on this and you talked to a student. Just tell the story of what this student told you and how ridiculous this is.”
HINOJOSA: “So, Kaitlyn Gonzalez, who is a survivor of the Uvalde school massacre — by the way, she says hello.”
CAPEHART: “Oh, hi.”
HINOJOSA: “Kaitlyn told me, when I asked her, ‘So what do you think about this?’ She is such a great 12-year-old. She said, ‘Well, I study the Bible on Wednesdays and on Sundays. So if they’re gonna teach it in school, I can tell you now, I’ll be asleep in that class.’ Which is funny, because Kaitlyn has a way, even though she has experienced all this trauma, to be a fabulous 12-year-old. But then she said to me, ‘Tell me, how is a Bible supposed to stop a gun?’”
REINISH: “Wow.”
HINOJOSA: “How is a Bible supposed to stop a gun? That is a question that, you know, right now, children in Texas and Uvalde will actually have to think about because they’re going to be presented with this reality.”
REINISH: “And we’ve seen so many ways, you know, with abortion and choice and women’s choice, of course, we are just giving it back to the states. Well, that means there will be so many insane disparities because what children in one state are exposed to and learning and getting through college and career through and others. This inconsistency does not serve anybody.”
CAPEHART: “And the thing that is most galling to me is they are spending all this time trying to — well, one, they’re saying, ‘The left is trying to indoctrinate our children.’ And yet, now, they are trying to force religion to be taught in schools, when the young — “
HINOJOSA: “Kaitlyn.”
CAPEHART: “ — Kaitlyn said to you, ‘How is a Bible going to stop a gun?’ Why aren’t they focused on the things that truly matter to keep children safe?”
REINISH: “They get a primary with one and not with the other.”
HINOJOSA: “Also, Kaitlyn’s mom, by the way, said, and Kaitlyn was actually saying, ‘My mom and I have talked about this and we understand that there should be a church — there should be a division between church and state, and that people should be able to choose the religion that they want.’ This is the conversation in south Texas, in Uvalde, because she was like, ‘Yeah, there should be a Muslim in my school, there should be a Buddhist in my school, there should be an atheist in my school. We don’t all have to learn the Bible.’”
CAPEHART: “Kaitlyn for president!”

HINOJOSA: “You know, I’m just saying. You heard it here first.”
