My investigation of a local radiation contamination site began when I learned about my father's early death at age 49 from exposure to radioactive substances during the Cold War. This revelation led me to start "Erasing America," a project documenting forgotten sites with historical and environmental secrets. For 15 years, I've explored abandoned sites across the USA, including one in Cleveland, Ohio - the former Harshaw Chemical Company: this 55-acre site, a key player in the Manhattan Project, processed uranium from 1944 to 1959. A 1984 survey revealed extensive contamination, including long-lived isotopes like plutonium-239. The site, bordered by the Cuyahoga River and Big Creek, showed major contamination in Plant C and significant levels in 16 other buildings and 32 exterior locations. In December 2023, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $13.4 million contract for cleanup. As a home inspector with 40 years of experience, I noticed a pattern of cancer cases in nearby neighborhoods. The contamination affected plans for the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, forcing route adjustments. In December 2014, demolition began under suspicious circumstances. It was zero degrees on December 26, and the city was shut down. Abatement contractors weren't following proper dust control procedures. Workers in hazmat suits spotted me filming and tried to chase me down. Six months later, I observed soil being loaded from the demolition site. I followed a dump truck for an hour around the city, ending at the E55th Street diner, where the driver confronted me. The nuclear industry's secrecy was evident in poorly publicized public meetings. I attended one at the Holiday Inn, hastily announced 15 minutes before it started.
The room was full of EPA, government, and other officials, with only three genuine attendees, including myself. Concerns about groundwater contamination persist. The industry continues to spin, conceal, and shadow-ban information from the public. Recently, I revisited the site and encountered a security guard unaware of the radioactive hazards. "What brings you here?" he inquired. I explained it was a contaminated superfund site. He admitted starting the job three months ago, earning $26 an hour, with only a vague idea of potential contamination. Noticing his car parked on old foundations, I warned him to move it for safety. He quickly relocated his vehicle. Eighty years later, people are still spinning, concealing, and lying about the dangers at this site.
