This Week’s Lesson

We are in Lesson-11 in the series “Rebuilding on the Solid Rock” from the book of Ezra.

This is Volume I of our series: “After the Exile” a study of Ezra-Nehemiah-Esther.

The lesson is titled “Dealing with Unfaithfulness – Part I” and our focus passage is Ezra 9.

Please find your way in your Bible to that passage.

In our previous episode, we concluded our study of Ezra 7-8, The Good Hand of Our God.

Ezra led a 2nd wave of Exiles back to Jerusalem. We picked-up the story from Ezra 6 and it was about 60 years after the Temple rebuilding project was completed (515 B.C.).

We learned that Ezra had firmly resolved (i.e., set his heart) to study the Law of Yahweh, to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.

Apparently, he made the request to the king for this trip and because the good hand of His God was upon him, the requests were granted.

Ezra was committed to Yahweh and His Torah. He was committed to bless the people of Israel.

And I believe that because of that commitment, the LORD was committed to Him and blessed this entire enterprise.

In today’s lesson we will begin our study of Ezra 9-10.  Much like Ezra 5-6 and Ezra 7-8, these two chapters form a unified narrative.

After the successful return led by Ezra, he is going to be confronted with a serious problem within the Exile community.

Ezra is going to be confronted with a very difficult issue that I am almost 100% sure he was not expecting.

The exiles had not been faithful to the LORD in following the Torah. This put the community in danger.

What would Ezra do? How is going to deal with this issue?

Let’s get started.
