The New Orleans Police Department released body camera footage Friday from a shooting where an officer injured a burglary suspect in Uptown last month.
The shooting happened in the 1200 block of State Street around 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 10.
Police said the area had seen an uptick in burglaries, with guns stolen from homes.
At the time of the shooting, NOPD had responded to five burglaries in the area in recent weeks.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the suspect, Dwayne Brown, 63, was wanted in connection with serial burglaries and home invasions in the area.
When police arrived on scene, they found Brown hiding in the backyard of a home at 1205 State Street. While approaching Brown, police say four rifles that Brown took from the home were leaning against a fence in the backyard.
After police approached Brown, Kirkpatrick said he ran to a nearby home in the 6000 block of Perrier Street, where he hid under a house.
Kirkpatrick said officers tased Brown, but he was able to escape again.
Officer James Godwin found the suspect in the driveway of a house when he is seen on video confronting him.
Godwin and Brown got into a fight. Video shows Brown assaulting the officer and attempting to remove items from Godwin's belt, before stepping back with a gun and shooting at the officer with a revolver police say Brown also took from the home on State Street.
Investigators say Brown shot five rounds from the revolver at the Godwin, and say Godwin returned fire, emptying one magazine.
Godwin was not struck by gunfire, but Brown was injured when he returned fire, according to Kirkpatrick.
Brown ran away again and was later found on the porch of a home in the 6000 block of Prytania Street.
Kirkpatrick said NOPD officers trained as medics rendered aid to Brown, who was later taken to an area hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
After he was released from the hospital, Brown was arrested and faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, 10 counts of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling, attempted simple burglary, simple burglary, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of felon in possession of a firearm, and one count of simple criminal damage.
Kirkpatrick said no other people were hurt during the burglary or during previous burglaries.
