Russia used its new hypersonic missile Oreshnik against Ukraine.
In response to Ukraine getting permission to use long range missiles against Russia, Russian forces fired new hypersonic missile “Oreshnik” at Dnipro city in Ukraine.
This the first combat use in history of an intermediate-range missile. It is a nuclear-capable weapon that had not been previously mentioned in public.
Hypersonic missiles travel at speeds of at least Mach 5 – five times the speed of sound – and can manoeuvre mid-flight, making them harder to track and intercept.
An intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) has a range of 1,000-5,500 kilometres, a level below that of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The Oreshnik missile could have three to six warheads.
All warheads arrive at the target simultaneously.
The US Department of Defense described “Oreshnik” as an "experimental" missile based on Russian RS-26 “Rubezh” ICBM.
“Oreshnik” had been deployed "in a non-nuclear hypersonic configuration", and the "test" had been successful and had hit its target.
“Air defences cannot intercept the “Oreshnik”, which attacks at a speed of Mach 10, or 2.5-3 kilometres (1.6-1.9 miles) per second,” Putin said.

In addition, President Vladimir Putin said:
"There is no countermeasure to such a missile, no means of intercepting it, in the world today. And I will emphasise once again that we will continue testing this newest system. It is necessary to establish serial production."
