WHY DID THE DEMS GIVE UP A STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE?

I am still trying to find a Democrat who will explain to me why they gave up the gigantic strategic advantage of having the person they wanted as their presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, in the seat, as president, running the government and the Free world at the same time as Joe Biden stepped down for her to become the next presidential candidate.
