SPRINGFIELD MA. OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING SUSPECT DIDN'T MAKE IT.....#thatpart

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A 24-year-old Springfield man, who was allegedly holding two guns, is dead following an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred around 1 a.m. Thursday.

The Hampden District Attorney’s Office told Western Mass News that, after receiving a 911 call, Springfield Police responded to the 100 block of Lyman Street. According to the D.A.’s office, the man was found at the entrance of an apartment building with two guns. Due to circumstances that remain under investigation, two officers fired their guns and hit the man. We are told that officers did provide medical aid on-scene.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno offered his condolences to the family, and assured the public a thorough investigation into what occurred will be done by police, as well as the Hampden District Attorney’s office.

“As soon as that information is available we will get that out to the public and the media but right now it is always difficult when a life is lost and it’s always difficult for police officers also,” the mayor said.

Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers is asking for patience at this time and added that more information will be released once the investigation is complete. “I want to say to the families involved here my sincere condolences not as a superintendent of police, but just as a man and a person that is part of this community. It is painful for all of us and we are grieving with the families and we will do the best we can to complete a thorough investigation as quickly as possible,” he explained.

This officer involved shooting remains under investigation by Springfield Police, as well as the D.A.’s office.
