The war has brought into focus the issue of equally "sharing the burden" – specifically, the participation of the ultra-Orthodox in the draft. But inequality in sharing the burden does not stop at the gates of military bases. It is also reflected in the economy, in the ultra-Orthodox community's low proportion of those being educated and working to provide for their families. The employment rate among Haredi men is 53 percent, far below the 87 percent among non-Haredi Jewish men. Moreover, those Haredi men who are employed mostly work part-time, with low levels of productivity and wages, thanks in large part to a lack of quality education. At the same time, Haredi families tend to be large, putting strain on the national budget and gross domestic product.
