It can go without saying that one of the chief tenets of politics is never forgetting the amount of political capital you retain among the circles of people you wish to influence. This truth is only magnified when a President-elect is considering political appointees who must pass a narrowly divided Senate.

While no amount of political capital was ever available to save Matt Gaetz, Pete Hegseth could be a different story. However, Hegseth is facing a previously undisclosed police report from someone who claims to be a victim of sexual assault by Hegseth. Unlike some on my side, I think the criticisms of Hegseth are quite overblown and believe he would do an excellent job as Secretary of Defense. But with so many other baggage-free candidates who could do an equally fine job, is the political capital justified to get Hegseth to a majority vote in the Senate? Let me explain:
