"THE WAR GAME" || A 1966 DOCUMENTARY

☆ The War Game (1966) is a British film styled as a pseudo-documentary that explores the devastation of a nuclear war and its aftermath. Directed and produced by Peter Watkins for the BBC, it generated controversy, unsettling both the broadcaster and government officials. This led to its removal from the planned broadcast date of 6 October 1965. The BBC justified this decision by stating the film's content was too shocking for television, though it would still be screened privately for select audiences.
The film finally debuted at London’s National Film Theatre on 13 April 1966, with screenings continuing until 3 May. It gained further acclaim abroad, showing at various festivals, including Venice, where it received the Special Prize. In 1967, it was honoured with the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
