"The Briar Rose," also known as "Sleeping Beauty," tells the tale of a king and queen who celebrate the birth of their beautiful daughter with a grand feast, inviting twelve wise women, or fairies, to bestow gifts upon her. However, due to a shortage of gold trenchers, the thirteenth fairy is left uninvited and vows revenge, declaring that the princess will die after pricking her hand on a spindle when she turns fifteen. A twelfth fairy intervenes, softening the curse: instead of death, the princess will fall into a deep sleep for one hundred years, only to be awakened by a prince’s kiss. To protect their daughter, the king orders all spindles to be banished from the kingdom. The princess grows up admired for her beauty and virtues. On the brink of her fifteenth birthday, she discovers a hidden tower and encounters an old woman spinning at a wheel. As she tries to spin, she inadvertently pricks her finger, falling into a deep sleep consistent with the curse. The entire palace follows suit, succumbing to the enchantment.
