Sea lions are the clowns of the ocean, often compared with dogs, our loveable companions. They have a similar face and similar behaviour, exhibiting curiosity and a playful nature. And like dogs, they can also show jealousy when they are not given enough attention. This mischievous sea lion is a young female, comparable to a teenager and she showed up to watch scuba divers who were diving with marine iguanas in the Galapagos Islands. Rare creatures, the iguanas were the centre of attention for the underwater photographers. This sea lion watched them curiously and then decided to get in on the fun by circling around them and inviting them to play. The sea lions are far more agile in the water and they clearly enjoy showing off and reminding humans that they are clumsy and slow in comparison. The sea lion peers into the camera and then shoots her head forward suddenly, exhaling and making a sound that is very similar to "boo" in human speak. One of the divers caught the interaction face on with his GoPro while his wife caught the side view on her camera. This sea lion played with them in this way for more than 20 minutes, which actually made them forget about the marine iguanas for the remainder of the dive. Sea lions are among the most adorable creatures in the ocean. The young ones and the females react well to humans, but large, alpha males command respect and divers and swimmers are wise to steer clear, When full grown, the males are territorial and protective of their colony and their turf. And, as always, animals should be given a respectful distance to prevent misunderstandings.

Giant manta rays congregate in the Galapagos Islands more than any other place in the world. It's one of the best places to have a magical encounter with one of the ocean's most majestic animals. The wingspan on these creatures can reach 7m (23 feet) and they can weigh as much as 3,000kg (6,600lbs). The manta ray is the epitome of grace and beauty as it moves through the water by flapping its wings like a giant bird. These fortunate divers met this ray as it rounded a curve and swam past them in the waters off Cousin's Rock. The manta seemed unconcerned by the presence of the divers as it slowly passed by. Mantas are highly intelligent fish, believed to be capable of self-awareness. They have proven that they recognize their reflection and they actually move their bodies to view areas that they cannot see on their own. They occasionally exhibit curiosity when they meet humans underwater.

Whale sharks are the largest species of fish on the planet. They are among the largest animals to have ever lived. Only blue whales, sperm whales, and humpback whales (all mammals) are larger. The largest ever recorded was 18.8m (almost 62 feet) long. The only fish that has ever lived that was larger than a whale shark is the now extinct megalodon. Whale sharks have enormous mouths with no teeth. They feed by filtering fish eggs, krill, and small fish, trapping them in baleen plates (comb-like structures) as whales do. They swim with open mouths, eating enormous amounts of tiny creatures daily. Plagued by parasites and remoras, the whale sharks follow ocean currents to the Galapagos Islands for the cleaning stations. Trevallies, silky sharks, Galapagos sharks, and blacktip reef sharks prey on the remoras, ridding whale sharks of the nuisance fish that clog their gills and create drag. The remoras attach themselves with sucker plates, hitching a ride. They detach themselves to eat feces and scraps of fish in the water, then reattach to the whale shark. This makes swimming much more difficult for the whale sharks. Small wrasses make their home here and they eat the smaller parasites from the mouth and gills of the whale sharks. Three strong ocean currents collide near the remote Darwin Island, bringing an upwelling of cold water and nutrients from the depths of the ocean. This provides food for many of the species here, such as hammerhead and Galapagos sharks. It is a unique combination of conditions that creates this abundance of whale sharks. Scuba divers wishing to meet a whale shark close up venture here from all over the world. These lucky divers slipped into the water at the base of Darwin's Arch and found themselves almost surrounded by the magnificent animals. In 7 dives, they sighted more than 20 whale sharks. Some of the giant beasts exhibited curiosity, slowly cruising past them or even turning toward the divers as if they were hoping that the clumsy humans were able to provide a cleaning service for them. To look one of these giants in the eye is an experience that takes your breath away. Their gorgeous markings and majestic size make them one of the most sought after animals for underwater explorers. Spotted eagle rays are members of the stingray family. They are highly intelligent, curious, and highly social. This family of stingrays glides effortlessly on the current in the waters of Wolf Island, a remote scuba diving site. The currents collide here, bringing un upwelling of nutrients that attracts bait fish, sharks, and other predators. The animal life here is spectacular and diverse. Suba divers travel from all over the world to witness what is referred to as the world's largest iMax theatre show. Whale sharks, orcas, Galapagos sharks, and hammerheads, sea turtles, and even penguins come to the Galapagos islands for feeding, mating, and the cleaning stations where smaller fish remove parasites and pests from the larger animals. These divers have ventured here from Canada to come face to face with some of the most incredible and mysterious animals on the planet.

Whale sharks are huge animals. With the exception of a few whale species, they are the largest creatures in the ocean. They are the biggest fish to have ever lived. They are a member of the shark family, but unlike other sharks, they do not possess teeth. Instead, they have baleen, large, comb-like structures that are used to filter their tiny food from the water. Whale sharks are gentle creatures, unable to intentionally hurt a human. They have no means of fighting predators. They simply outswim them or dive to depths that other animals, such as orcas, cannot follow. These scuba divers in the Galapagos Islands are thrilled to see a gigantic female cruising right through their group as if they weren't there. The diver recording captures a perspective that shows how tiny the people are in comparison with this behemoth. The Galapagos Islands are famous for their efforts in conservation. They have protected and respected the wildlife so effectively that it is still one of the most diverse areas in the world. The whale sharks come here for the safety and the cleaning stations, where other fish such as trevallies and silky sharks rid them of unwanted remoras. The remoras attach to the sharks in such numbers that they impede movement and interfere with their gills.

Brazil is the home of the Pantanal, the world's largest and most significant floodplain. Animals here roam throughout a vast grassland during the dry season. But, during the rainy season, the water rises and reduces the amount of dry area drastically. Caiman, members of the crocodile family dominate the swamps and bask in the sunshine. Piranha, anacondas, capybara, and birds wade in the shallows and try to find food where they can. This zebu cow grazes among dozens of caiman as if there is nothing to fear. The caiman, even with enormous mouths full of teeth, seem to be more worried about being stepped on by the cow.

Southern screamers are one of the largest birds in South America. Almost 1m (3 feet) tall, they have a massive wingspan of 1.5m (4.5 feet). They resemble prehistoric creatures with their head plumage and huge feet. This mating pair were found in the wetlands of the Pantanal in Brazil. When full-grown, they have few predators able to take them down. They roam the grassy areas in search of food, but they are excellent fliers and capable swimmers. They graze like geese and scratch for food like chickens. These birds typically mate for life, engaging in calling rituals as seen here. Their shrill cries can be heard at a distance of 3km (2 miles). Aptly referred to as screaming, these birds make excellent guards with their loud alarm calls.

Guests on a tour of a river in Brazil's Pantanal were treated to a view of something rarely recorded. A butterfly was seen fluttering around the face of a huge caiman, a member of the crocodile family, as it sunned itself on the sandy banks of the river. The obvious question was why a butterfly would take the risk of flapping around such a big set of jaws. A veterinarian in the group said she had heard that the butterflies sip the tears of crocs and caiman for the salt and minerals, as well as proteind in the mucous around the eyes. On cue, the butterfly landed on the caiman's eye and began sipping away. Butterflies have recently been documented drinking the tears of caiman. Although it is now believed to be common, the behaviour has rarely been filmed. These guests were seeing something quite extraordinary. The caiman seems unimpressed with having a large insect on its eye. It blinks and tries to rid itself of the annoyance, moving closer to the water as if threatening to take a plunge just to get rid of its little friend. The more time we spend observing the behaviour of animals in the wild, the more we realize that we have much to learn.

The giraffe is one of the most beautiful and majestic animals on earth. It holds the title as the tallest terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant on the planet. It's long neck and striking pattern make it instantly recognized. Giraffes reach a height of 5.7 m (18.7 ft). Fully grown females reach a weight of 1,192 kg (2,628 lb) Females are slightly smaller. Giraffes hold several titles including being the animal with the longest tongue and the strongest tongue. Giraffes have uniquely adapted skull bones to allow them to bend their head back so they can access leaves directly above them. When drought strikes a region, the giraffe has very little competition as it easily reaches the highest foliage. But researchers believe that there is also a possibility that the giraffes with the longest necks require more nutrients than their counterparts, placing them at a disadvantage. The bone structure in a giraffe's head even gives them a very powerful weapon. The bony horns on the top of their head is used in combat with other giraffes to establish dominance. It is also used to deliver extremely powerful blows to predators such as lions and hyenas. With their long neck, they can swing their head like a club. Giraffes are fast runners, being able to maintain speeds of 50km/h (31mph) over great distances and up to 60km/h (37mph) for shorter sprints. This allows them to outrun many predators. A giraffe has a very large heart in comparison with other animals. It also possesses extremely strong esophageal muscles to allow food to pass back up to the mouth for rumination. Giraffes are truly a marvel of nature and a sight to behold. These magnificent animals are part of a wild herd in Kenya, Africa. A close look at a giraffe casually eating in the wild is something that will never be forgotten.

The hyacinth macaw is a parrot native to central and eastern South America. It can reach a length of one meter (3 ft) from head to tail and weigh nearly 2kg (4lb). It is longer than any other species of parrot and it is the largest macaw. It is the largest flying parrot in the world. Because of its size and brilliantly coloured plumage, it is heavily sought after for the pet trade. Together with habitat loss, these two factors have greatly impacted the macaw's numbers. They are listed as a threatened species. The hyacinth macaw has a very powerful beak, capable of cracking many kinds of nuts, including coconuts. Highly intelligent, they are able to use they feet to hold the nut while they peel and crack it to access the food inside. Their tongue works like a finger to free the nut meat from spaces in the shell. The hyacinth macaw is the only bird that possesses the necessary jaw strength to crack the shell of a macadamia nut (300psi). They are known as tool users, taking advantage of sticks or leaf stems to hold nuts in place while they chew them open. This macaw was observed in the wilds of Brazil's Pantanal, one of the world's largest floodplains. The macaws were seen feeding in the trees and Luiz, a guide who makes his living showing the wonders of this region to guests, explains how the macaws feed. Luiz is an expert on the plants, birds, mammals, and fish in this area. Having guided here for more than 30 years, there is very little that he doesn't know about the inhabitants of this part of the world.

It is the world's largest tropical wetland and the world's largest flooded grasslands. The struggle to survive is as real and as dramatic here as anywhere else in the world. Huge caiman (crocodile family) cruise the wetlands and occupy the shoreline, feeding on fish and smaller animals and birds. They are a top predator here and they fear few animals. But they are hunted and preyed upon by the jaguar, the undeniable apex predator on this continent. Jaguar sit along the banks or wander the shorelines in hope of a meal. The jaguar is a formidable cat with a huge head and powerful jaws that hold an incredible bite force. The jaguar can bite through an animal's skull to deliver a deadly blow. Jaguars measure up to 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) and have a weight of up to 158 kg (348 lb). It is the biggest cat species in the Americas and the third largest in the world. Here, in the Pantanal, they are the undisputed rulers and they patrol the shorelines and wetlands without fear. Only another jaguar could take down a healthy, adult jaguar. This jaguar was sitting on the bank of a narrow river, hidden by tall grass until a boat full of tourists cruised slowly past and realized that they were almost right beside this behemoth. Whether it was waiting for a caiman to swim past, or possibly just waking up from a snooze is hard to know. The boat operator wisely cruised right past and put some distance between them all before turning to give his guests a close look at the giant cat. Jaguars can leap up to 10m (30 feet), easily covering the distance between the boat and the shore if it had decided to. As it yawns, it shows the incredible teeth and head muscles that make this animal such a deadly predator. The group watched the jaguar from a respectable distance, enjoying the magnificence until it turned and slowly wandered into the grass. This is an encounter that none of them will ever forget.

The capybara is the largest living rodent, native to South America. The capybara inhabits savannas and dense forests, and lives near bodies of water. It is a highly social species and can be found in groups as large as one hundred individuals, but usually live in groups of 10–20 individuals. The capybara has a heavy, barrel-shaped body and short head, with reddish-brown fur on the upper part of its body that turns yellowish-brown underneath. Adult capybaras grow to 106 to 134 cm (3.48 to 4.40 ft) in length, stand 50 to 62 cm (20 to 24 in) tall at the shoulder. They typically weigh 35 to 66 kg (77 to 146 lb). The record weight for a capybara is 91kg (201lbs). Capybaras are herbivores, grazing mainly on grasses and aquatic plants, as well as fruit and tree bark. Capybaras eat their own feces as a source of bacterial gut flora, to help digest the cellulose in the grass that forms their normal diet, and to extract the maximum protein and vitamins from their food. Their teeth grow continuously to compensate for the wear produced by grinding as they chew their food. The maximum lifespan of the capybara is 8 to 10 years, but in the wild capybaras usually do not live longer than four years because of predation from South American big cats such as jaguars and cougars and from harpy eagles, caimans, green anacondas and piranhas. Baby capybara are milk-bandits, suckling from any lactating female in the herd. These capybaras were filmed in the wilds of the Pantanal in Brazil. They are one of the world's most beloved animals.

This six-banded armadillo was found wandering under palm trees, enjoying the nuts that had fallen to the ground. With poor eyesight, they are shy and reclusive, nervous about their surroundings. But this videographer was able to record close footage by setting up a tripod and remaining as still as possible. The adorable little creature nibbled away contentedly, ignoring the fascinated tourist and almost walking across his feet. The six-banded armadillois typically between 40 and 50 centimeters (16 and 20 in) in head-and-body length, and weighs 3.2 to 6.5 kilograms (7.1 to 14.3 lb). They are omnivores, feeding on ants, other insects, carrion, and plants. This armadillo appears to be a nursing mother. They have one to three in a litter and the young are weaned after approximately one month. The face on this unusual little creature is simply beautiful.

This jaguar pounced on and killed this full-grown caiman at the water's edge, grabbing it by the throat and head, killing it quickly. A group of tourists in a boat arrived to witness the caiman's final moments as the jaguar held it down on the riverbank. The huge cat breathed heavily, exhausted from the struggle and the effort required to drag the caiman from the water. The caiman is much longer and is nearly as heavy as the jaguar. The jaguar knows that the caiman cannot be eaten on the narrow ledge without interference. She drags it along the river to a spot where the bank above is more easily reached. After resting, she jumps up, turns to grab the caiman again and then drags it up and over the ledge, into the jungle where she can eat it in peace. The caiman will be more than a meal for this big cat. She will gorge on the carcass and then stash it and guard it for a few days, eating several times. When she has eaten her fill and decided to move on, smaller cats, birds, and scavengers of all sorts will move in for their share of the remains. Nothing will go to waste here in the Pantanal. To see a battle such as this is both beautiful and horrific as nature shows it has a harsh and unforgiving side. The balance between predator and prey is a delicate one and it can change in an instant as this caiman found out.

This small river in the middle of nowhere provides the perfect afternoon getaway for a group of Canadians intent on beating the July heat. A few refreshing beverages and a well-stocked charcuterie board provide the snacks needed for a long and leisurely journey through forest, flower patches, small rapids, shallows, and even a few tiny waterfalls. The slow pace makes for a trip that lasts approximately an hour before it's time to get out and walk the beautiful path back to the starting point. The scenery here is hard to beat. A slight breeze and an occasional dip in the water cools guests off perfectly. Remote and not easy to find, this little piece of paradise is one of the undiscovered highlights of Ontario, Canada.

This groundhog is just too cute! He comes out of his burrow in the morning to look around and he finds a strange object sitting right in front of the entrance. Curiously, he decides to have a sniff. Sensing that it's nothing that will do him any harm, he decides to get tucked in at the den entrance and have a little more of a snooze. It's almost as if he pushed a snooze button on an alarm clock before having another 10 minutes to doze in the sunshine.

Bull sharks are formidable creatures who command respect. Their stocky bodies and powerful jaws can intimidate even the most seasoned scuba diver. Here, in Roatan, Honduras, the bull sharks are the apex predators and they fear nothing. As these scuba divers completed a dive, they were surprised at the arrival of more than a dozen of the hefty animals. The sharks swam around them curiously, evaluating them with watchful eyes. The scuba divers wisely stayed low and moved slowly, showing no fear and doing their best not to act like prey. Sharks will rarely bite humans, and when they do, it is often because of irresponsible or careless behaviour. These divers waited for the sharks to lose interest and swim away before they ascended calmly as a group to return to the boat. They had a thrilling encounter and also, pictures and videos that are unforgettable.

White-tailed deer are extremely peaceful creatures that can be found in most forests in North America, Central America, and South America. They wander and graze most of the day, preferring to eat grass, fallen fruit, and grain where they can find it. This man knows that if he sits almost motionless in the forest, snacking on apples or carrots, deer will eventually become curious enough to get close. This is a protected forest and there is no hunting allowed anywhere in the area. The deer seem to understand that they will not be harmed if they approach humans, but they will only come this close for those patient enough to be very quiet and still. This man knows the smell of food and the crunching will be hard to resist. After a long wait, a deer appears and slowly walks over with curiosity. It finds the carrots and corn on the ground and it happily snacks away near the man. An encounter like this is a beautiful and unforgettable experience.

Loggerhead sea turtles are one of the largest turtles in the ocean. They range from 140 - 450kg (300 - 1,000 pounds) and have massive heads that allow them to crush large conch shells easily. They feed on mollusks and other invertebrates, such as lobsters and crabs. These gentle giants are usually shy and reclusive but the males become curious during mating season when they will occasionally approach scuba divers for a close inspection. Kristy was diving in the waters near Akumal, Mexico when this behemoth spotted her from a distance and swam right at her. She needed to gently push him away to avoid a collision. She then followed the great beast to get some photographs. She realized her husband had his camera running and asked if he had captured the encounter on video. Her squeals of delight show just how happy she was that he had recorded it all.

The Galapagos Islands are unique and fascinating for many reasons. Situated on the equator, west of Ecuador, they are home to some unbelievable animals. Four strong ocean currents converge here, creating an upwelling of cold water and nutrients that bring fish and other animals to the area. These smaller creatures attract larger predators. Hammerhead sharks, silky sharks, and Galapagos sharks congregate here in great numbers. Trevallies, large fish that prey on smaller fish are also common here. One of the most magnificent creatures in the ocean also come to these waters. Whale sharks are the biggest fish that live. Only a few species of whale are larger. The whale sharks are plagued by remoras, fish that cling to them with suction cups on their heads, creating extra drag that is problematic for whale sharks that swim great distances. The remoras also swim inside the gill slits and affect the whale sharks' ability to effectively filter plankton and krill. The whale sharks come to the Galapagos Islands for the cleaning stations that provide relief from these nuisance animals. The silky sharks are able to pick of the remoras as the whale sharks swim around the islands. Trevallies are large enough to do the same, but also small enough to go inside the gill slits and the mouth of the whale sharks to eat the remoras. This service provides food for the other predators and an invaluable benefit to the whale sharks. Occasionally, remoras on a single whale shark can number in the dozens. They hitch rides on the shark to avoid the effort of swimming and they break free to swim out and eat the feces from the whale sharks and any fish scraps in the water as the other fish feed nearby. Although a few remoras can benefit the whale sharks because they eat some parasites, a large number of them is detrimental to the whale sharks. This whale shark cruised around Darwin Island with a pod of dolphins escorting it and it swam right through a group of scuba divers who were in awe. This gentle beast has been seen circling Darwin Island several times since 2018.

Sea lions are the clowns of the ocean. Much like dogs in their personality and their appearance, they have an uncanny ability to amuse us with their antics. This curious fellow has climbed aboard a scuba diving boat in the Galapagos Islands and it inspects all of the equipment cubbies. It may be looking for food or it may simply want to know what's in the storage areas. After poking his head in every storage spot, it slips off the back of the boat and into the water. It looks as if it is reporting its findings to a friend who is waiting in the water below. The two of them go back to their frolicking after the inspection is complete.

This Lamborghini driver had an impossible deadline with a lot on the line. To get where he needed to be in time, he set out to cover as much distance as possible in a short time on this long, straight stretch of multi-lane highway. He reached speeds of nearly 300km/h in this race against time. In a long distance rally for sponsorship, funds were being raised for a young girl fighting cancer. The family's medical costs were staggering and the event would pay off a debt that was crushing them. Promotional events had been scheduled across the country and time was tight. Whale sharks are one of the most beautiful and magnificent creatures on the planet. They are the largest shark, and also the largest fish in the ocean. Only a few species of whales are larger. At up to 17m (55 feet) in length, and up to 45,000kg (100,000lbs) whale sharks are a truly enormous and awe-inspiring animal. To be in their presence is simply breath taking. These scuba divers are exploring the waters in the Galapagos Islands where whale sharks come each year. They cruise along with the currents in the waters around the more remote islands here. Scuba divers venture to the Galapagos from all over the world, hoping to catch a brief glimpse of these beautiful creatures. The lucky few will be able to capture a photograph or a video. But these scuba divers were fortunate enough to be in the water right in the path of a large, pregnant female as it swam straight through their group. They move gracefully, but they are not agile, and changing course seems to be something they cannot or will not do. Nearly bumping into one scuba diver, the shark maintains its course. To see a whale shark approaching is often a stunning experience. The first scuba diver that the shark reaches is frozen in place, directly in its path. His dive partner assists by gently pulling upwards on his tank and to lift him up a few feet. It is very important that these animals are not disturbed or stressed by the presence of humans in their world. Contact with whale sharks is to be avoided whenever possible. The scuba diver with the camera has been surrounded by small fish, and they part respectfully and move out of the way, giving our cameraman a sudden view of the majestic shark coming right toward him. He stares in complete awe but keeps the camera pointed at the shark. Unable to move, he remains perfectly still and records the world's largest shark smoothly gliding just inches over his head. The fins pass on either side of his camera and he moves carefully to the side to avoid one of the biggest and most powerful tails in the world. As the shark swims past, the diver is now able to move and he swims up and over the shark to record it from above. He allows it to pass and then he turns the camera to the rest of the scuba divers who are also in complete awe of what they have just seen. This shark is completely unconcerned with the scuba divers and it makes no effort to avoid them. It is believed that they may even have some curiosity about humans, recognizing them as being no threat. Once full grown, a whale shark fears only large Galapagos sharks, which it can easily outswim if needed.

They are capable of changing colour to mimic their surroundings and hide from predators. Scrawled filefish feed on algae, seagrass, hydrozoans, gorgonians (soft corals) , colonial anemones, and tunicates. Their mouth is bizarrely shaped, at the end of a pointed snout.

This is a sharptail snake eel and during our week of diving, they were in the coral reef and grass beds (the grasslands) and were unconcerned with me being there.

Osprey, also known as fish eagles, are Canada's second largest bird. Only the bald eagle has a slightly longer wingspan than the osprey. They are ferocious predators, able to catch and carry off large fish that venture too close to the surface of the water. Their talons are razor sharp and they are barbed for holding onto their catch. These talons are not solely for gripping food. They are also used in self defense, which is a not uncommon during nesting season in the spring. The osprey in the nest is the female in a nesting pair that have built this particular nest. They return to it each spring. They have rivalry from a nearby nesting pair that occasionally come to this nest to fight over food or to have a territorial fight. The lady of the house was watching with a keen eye while her mate was off gathering food at a lake nearly one kilometer away. Her mate has caught a catfish and he has brought it home for the pair to feast on. But, before they eat this meal, they have a squabble with the other pair of ospreys who would like to steal the fish from them. The female in the nest is squawking with excitement as she sees her mate approaching and she squeals to show either her delight at the incoming food, or a warning because she can see the impending attack. These fights are not unusual between birds of prey. Such squabbles ensure that hunting and nesting grounds are not over populated, as they encourage new arrivals or weaker pairs to seek a nesting site elsewhere.

Salemas are a type of porgy fish that school in massive numbers in the Galapagos Islands. Sea lions hunt these fish by herding them into tight balls and then blasting through them in the hope of capturing one or two disoriented or confused individuals. These sea lions have found a shallow bay where the salemas have taken shelter. They move swiftly from one side of the bay to the other as they take turns trying to catch a meal. The school of salemas forms a dark cloud, as seen by a drone flying overhead. As the sea lions make their way through the mass, the salemas dart sideways for cover, creating a clear area that surrounds the sea lions. The effect is quite a sight from the sky. Sea lions are surprisingly agile in the water. Clumsy on land, they are designed for swimming rapidly and moving in all directions under water. They are capable of catching fish, eels, octopus, and other ocean creatures. This drone was being flown as part of a research flight to map areas of the shore line. Recording the sea lions hunting was an unintentional, but interesting occurrence.

Cameron is a scuba diver who has spent a lot of time on the reefs of Mexico, Belize, Cayman Islands, Cuba, and the Galapagos. He has seen sharks, dolphins, eels, fish of all kinds, and even whale sharks. But one of his favourite animals is sea turtles. This dive was quite a thrill for Cameron when a very relaxed se turtle swam over the coral and circled around, looking for a a place to have a snooze. Sea turtles are graceful and beautiful animals. They glide over the water with majestically. Scuba divers always take great delight in seeing one, but having an encounter like this is unforgettable.

This magnificent beast has emerged from the brush on one side of Santa Cruz' main roads, making his way across to the vegetation on the other side. But he is in no hurry as he moves and he is not concerned about the traffic that is now common on his island. There was no traffic here when he began his life, long before this road was anything more than a trail. The giant Galapagos tortoise is one of the most iconic animals in the world. Known as one of the longest-living vertebrates on the planet, these animals are magnificent and awe-inspiring. If only they could tell us their stories. This giant beast is well over 150kg (330lbs) and has probably been roaming the island of Santa Cruz for more than 100 years. He eats, sleeps, and leaves enormous droppings all day long. Tortoises will eat almost any kind of vegetation and they do so in great quantities. They store large amounts of water and food, giving them the ability to go without either for up to a year. The giant Galapagos tortoises are believed to be descended from African tortoises, having arrived here on floating rafts of vegetation. Few animals would survive a trip across the ocean like this, but their ability to go without fresh water or food for very prolonged periods makes this possible. Giant tortoises have no means of defence from predators except to pull their heads into their shells. Their solid shells and armoured legs make it difficult for even a determined creature to harm them and they can simply sleep and outwait any predator. The longevity of this species is also what makes it possible for enough of the eggs to reach maturity. The young are easily predated by birds, dogs, rats, and other creatures and it is only the fact that a mature female lays many eggs over her lifetime that makes it possible for their populations to be maintained. The locals carefully make their way around the animals, respecting the need for distance. If a tortoise wanders onto the roadway, traffic will stop until the tortoise is safely across. Galapaganians live in harmony with nature and with the animals that have been here on the islands long before humans.

Humpback whales are one of the most majestic and fascinating creatures on the planet. They possess an intelligence and level of understanding that is not far behind that of humans. In fact, as recently as 100,000 years ago, whales and dolphins were the most intelligent creatures alive, even surpassing our own ancestors. The humpbacks' communication is so sophisticated that we cannot decipher it ourselves. However, we do recognize that their extremely complex songs are loops of repeating sounds that may last as long as 20 minutes and can echo through the water for hundreds of miles. Scientists have included recordings of their songs on the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft that are currently traveling through space beyond our own solar system. The humpback whales are a mix of beauty and mystery like no other creatures. Whales are the biggest animals to inhabit our planet, ever. Even the long extinct dinosaurs were not as large as our whales. Their evolution into the most massive creatures to ever live defies much of what we know about science and bio mechanics. The more we learn about them, the more we realize how much we do not yet understand. And of all the whales, the humpbacks are the ones that we recognize most readily and the ones we identify with the most. Their wonderful, leaping breaches are a true spectacle, and their haunting and endearing songs captivate us completely. To have the privilege of swimming beside one and looking it in the eye is unforgettable. This humpback whale has ascended from the ocean floor to breath and to greet a bunch of thrilled swimmers. It looks them curiously in the eyes as it rolls invites them to play. This group of whale enthusiasts has slipped into the water to observe the whale from a respectful distance but the curious animal decided to come closer for a good look at them. The great beast sang to them with his powerful voice. To their extreme delight, he came within arm's length and stared straight at them with a lingering look as he slowly rolled on his side for a leisurely pass. The result was what seemed to be a request for a belly rub, much as you would expect from a large dog. As tempting as it might be to touch this whale, watchful guides are always present in the water to remind people that there are rules that must be respected. We are guests in their domain and physical contact must be avoided. For those who met this playful and curious whale, it was a moment that they will remember forever.

This swimmer accidentally discovered a colony of gelatinous masses attached to a submerged tree in the lake at his cottage. He was following a large bass when he came upon what he thought was a collection of algae growths. These mysterious looking blobs had the appearance of a coral and the texture of a slimy and rubbery ball. Algae is a plant and it is immobile, as these blobs were. They looked like some sort of alien life form. What the swimmer had actually found was an animal, or more correctly, a collection of them. These are freshwater bryozoan. Freshwater bryozoans are microscopic aquatic invertebrates that live in colonies. They can form into jelly-like clumps that often attach to docks or submerged sticks. Bryozoan colonies can reach 30 centimeters (one foot) in diameter. The base of each tiny bryozoan is attached to an underwater surface. Its body has an outer sleeve-like structure and a mass of organs called polypide that moves inside of it. This swimmer found a slice in the side of one of the masses and he pulled the flap aside, revealing a mass of algae and other structures. These animals use tentacles to filter diatoms and other microscopic organisms from the water. It is believed that bryazoan evolved from a marine worm. They can multiply themselves by budding, and they also grow eggs and sperm to reproduce. Larval forms will go through complete metamorphosis. Freshwater bryozoans form hard, round statoblasts inside their bodies that act like seeds. These creatures are a sign of a clean lake. It is a positive sign of a healthy ecosystem. The only negative aspect is that they can clog drainage pipes or water filters. This collection of bryozoans was found in a lake in Ontario, Canada.

In the distance, a line of sleek wind turbines turns slowly against a brilliant blue sky, their blades slicing through the air with quiet grace. The sun casts long, warm shadows, bathing the countryside in a golden glow as the drone soars onward, capturing the harmony between rural tradition and renewable energy. The scene is like something from a movie as this footage carries you on the breeze, weaving between the turbines. The windmills are giants that tower over the trees and the fields like behemoths. The aurora borealis is one of the most spectacular and breath taking sights in the world. People travel all over the globe to find the best place and the best chances to see this mysterious wonder. Some will be lucky if they enjoy only a brief sighting. But for some, like Joe Buffalo Child, the aurora borealis is like an old friend that appears in the night sky where they live, almost every night. Joe provides a guided tour that places guests under the lights on almost every clear night. For Joe, the lights are part of his culture, his upbringing, and his connection with nature and our planet. His ancestors taught that the aurora has spiritual significance and that they are a gift to the people, meant to bring reassurance and peace. This footage was taken by two Canadian tourists who traveled to Yellowknife because they dreamed of seeing the lights dancing in their full colour. What they didn't expect was the added enjoyment that came with Joe's storytelling and cultural perspective on the aurora and it's meaning in his Dene culture. This is a visual display of nature's most revered phenomenon. Joe has a charisma and a talent for storytelling that adds to the experience. His skill at delivering aurora sightings is impressive in every sense. Auroras are the result of disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere caused by the solar wind. Solar winds change speed as a result of coronal holes and coronal mass ejections, disturbances on the sun's crust. Charged particles in the magnetospheric plasma precipitate into the upper atmosphere of earth. The result is the emission of light of varying colour. However we view what causes them or what they mean, they are beautiful beyond description. The experience in Yellowknife during the day was also breathtaking. Driving on Great Slave Lake, dogsledding, flocks of ptarmigan, ravens, a snow castle, and a vast and beautiful landscape will make you fall in love with the north.

Gus, the largemouth bass has become quite an attraction at this family cottage in Ontario, Canada. He was living under the family's swim raft and showing serious curiosity when they swam around the raft. He often swam around their feet as they stirred up the sediment, probably looking for anything edible that was disturbed. As he became more used to the family, he would swim closer and closer to look at their faces under the water. The family was delighted with this friendly fish and they fed him a few worms by hand. He eagerly accepted the treats and almost instantly, he began begging for more. He started nibbling at their fingers and swimming up to their goggles to look them in the eye with his best fishy face. Soon, Gus was swimming between family members and under their arms, through their legs, and all around their faces, with the trust of a family dog. He even seemed to enjoy a belly rub now and then. When Serena, the daughter in the family swam around the small island, Gus followed her, leading at times, swimming just in front of her face as she completed the fifteen minute loop around the entire shore. This is highly unusual because the lake is full of pike and very large bass that would be able to make a meal of a 2-3 pound bass like Gus. Dave made the mistake of swimming out to the raft with no shirt on and Gus was more than curious about what he saw. Without warning, Gus was suddenly latched onto Dave with great enthusiasm. Dave screamed in shock and swam away from the raft while his wife laughed uproariously from the beach.

Swimming through an open cenote in Mexico is a beautiful experience. The crystal clear water provides an exceptional view of fish, rock formations, mangrove roots, and other plants. At the head of this inlet, water runs slowly and a gigantic algae bloom has grown. The algae has infested every surface, stretching out and flapping in the mild current in an eerie way. It gives the impression of a monstrous, slimy hand that reaches out to grasp a swimmer and pull them into the centre. But despite it's obvious creepiness, the slimy appendages are also beautiful and graceful in their movements. These algae blooms grow longer until pieces break off and drift downstream with the current. Beauty is a matter of perspective in many cases.

Yellowknife, Canada, is one of the best places in the world to witness the breathtaking beauty of the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. These divers were returning to the surface near Darwin Island when they were greeted by more than 50 dolphins that swam around them, passing closely and staring into their faces. The experience lasted several minutes. The dolphins clicked and squealed as if excited to see these guests. A luminous jellyfish with long trailing tentacles is a beautiful sight, as long as a scuba diver sees it in time to avoid contact. These scuba divers were finishing a dive in Akumal, Mexico and making their way to the surface when they came across this venomous creature swimming through the water. Jellyfish have tentacles armed with thousands of nematocysts, or stinging cells. When these cells come into contact with another animal, they fire tiny barbs that inject venom into the animal. This is used as a defense against predators and it is also a means of immobilizing prey that is then consumed. Jellyfish move through the water by contracting their bell to push water out and propel themselves forward. They are slow, but graceful and beautiful in their rhythmic movement and flowery structure.

Nature is undeniably beautiful. We see the beauty in the mountain views, the galloping horses, and the flight of a graceful and solitary bird against a blue sky. But nature is equally harsh and savage. The balance between predator and prey illustrates this dichotomy. These lions have taken down a wildebeest on a game preserve in Kenya, Africa. While it is a dark moment for the wildebeest, it is the continuance of life for the pride of lions that would not survive without the kill. To watch the lions in pursuit of their prey is an unforgettable experience. Darwin Island in the Galapagos is home to Galapagos Sharks, massive schools of hammerhead sharks, and whale sharks, the biggest shark in the ocean. Divers come here from all around the world to swim with these incredible creatures. The animals congregate here due to the convergence of four strong ocean currents that create an upwelling, bringing nutrients to the surface. The smaller fish come to feed and the larger predators follow. Whale sharks seek out predators such as silky sharks and trevallies to rid them of remoras, the fish that stick onto their fins and their gills. Scuba divers also congregate here to swim among the largest schools of hammerheads found anywhere. If they are lucky, divers will also come face to face with whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean. These massive, but gentle creatures are magnificent to see close up. There are few scuba diving locations in the world that compare with Darwin Island. It is remote, unpredictable, and magical.

This scuba diver couldn't believe his luck when a gigantic whale shark cruised right past him. The great beast would have run him over if he hadn't swam out of the way. Whale sharks are massive creatures that can grow to a whopping 18m (57 feet), topping the scales at an estimated 44,000kg (100,000lbs). To see them in real life creates a sense of awe and wonder. They are giants, but they are truly gentle beasts, virtually incapable of harming a human. Scientists believe that the whale sharks come to the waters near Darwin Island in the Galapagos to give birth. Almost all are pregnant females. But exactly where they do this is a mystery. Very few baby whale sharks have ever been seen. Three ocean currents collide in these waters, bringing an upwelling of nutrients from the deep ocean. This brings the larger fish and the apex predators like sharks. Although the water here is full of plankton and krill, the whale sharks are not here to feed. They are rarely seen with their mouths open as they swim around the island. This whale shark casually cruised through this group of awe-stricken scuba divers, making them look small and insignificant. These giant sharks are truly magnificent.

This mating pair of blue-footed boobies live on South Seymour Island in the Galapagos. They are among the most iconic animals in the world, recognized as being found only here. They nest on land but they live most of their lives on the cliffs and rocks at the water's edge, feeding on schools of fish as they are chased to the surface by predators. Flocks of boobies ascend high over the water and then dive in unison to catch their prey below. A large, synchronized dive is a spectacle to see! Boobies get their name, not from the closely related English word, but from the Spanish word "bobo" due to their clownlike behaviour and appearance. They are generally seen as slow witted birds and clumsy in their walk. But blue-footed boobies are highly skilled flyers and graceful swimmers. Boobies engage in courtship dances where the males display their brightly coloured feet and sometimes present the female with sticks for her nest. The more intensely coloured their feet are, the more successful they will be in a mating attempt.

Spotted eagle rays are beautiful stingrays with very distinctive heads and ornate markings. For any scuba diver or snorkeler, hey are a treat to see in the ocean. Usually shy and reclusive, watching one eating is a rare sight. This eagle ray seemed to be unconcerned as the scuba diver approached respectfully and watched it in action. Eagle rays use their electro sensory organs in their snout to detect crustaceans and mollusks buried beneath the sand. They inhale the animals and the sand and then expel the sand out through their gills. They are capable of crushing thick shells in their mouth in order to get at the creature within. Eagle rays are highly intelligent, and occasionally curious about humans who approach slowly.

The capybara is the world's largest rodent, living in various areas throughout South America. They grow to an incredible 134 cm (4.40 ft) in length, stand up to 62 cm (24 in) tall at the withers, and typically weigh 35 to 66 kg (77 to 146 lb). The largest ever recorded weighed 91kg (201lb). They are hunted for their meat, their hide, and for the grease derived from their fat. The females are typically larger than the males. Capybara are semiaquatic animals. They live in forested areas near bodies of water, wading in lakes, rivers, swamps, ponds, and marshes. They graze on aquatic vegetation and grasses. Capybara can hold their breath for up to five minutes at a time. They are herbivores, eating a variety of vegetation, switching their preferred diet from one season to another as the nutritional value of its food changes. Highly social animals, capybaras exist in herds of 10-20 but they gather in larger groups during the dry season when water is more scarce. The herd consists of a few adult males, a few adult females and offspring. Mating takes place in the water. If a female is not consenting to intercourse, she simply submerges, making it impossible to mate. Capybaras are farmed in some areas and considered pests and competition for grazing animals. Their populations remain stable throughout Central America.

One of the most famous dive sites in the world is Darwin's Arch, now collapsed due to erosion, and occasionally called Darwin's Pillars. The site is one of the best places in the world to encounter whale sharks, hammerheads, and Galapagos sharks. Dolphins are also plentiful here, with a large pod circling the island constantly. This very lucky scuba diver was preparing to enter the water for a dive when he spotted the spout of a whale right beside his dive boat. He was shocked to see a humpback in the water, calmly checking out the dive site itself. The dolphins seemed to be escorting this gentle giant as it circled the island on its way to wherever it was going. Humpbacks are enormous creatures with only a few whale species being larger. It's a very rare experience to see a humpback whale in the Galapagos Islands. These divers will never forget such a close encounter with this magnificent animal.

Pacific green turtles are enormous sea turtles. They get their name from the green fat that accumulates beneath the carapace due to it's diet of green sea grass. Green turtles migrate long distances between feeding grounds and the beaches where they congregate in massive groups to lay their eggs. The females climb out onto the beaches at night to deposit their eggs. Green turtles live up to 90 years, reaching 190kg (416lbs). The largest known green turtle weighed 395kg (871lbs) Despite laws to protect them, their numbers are decreasing due to overdevelopment of nesting areas, pollution, overharvesting, and dangers caused by fishing nets. Only humans, orcas, and large sharks actively prey on mature green turtles. This scuba diver in the Galapagos found himself surrounded by hundreds of the turtles that were congregating for breeding in the shallows near this shoreline. Unconcerned with his presence, some were curious enough to come up for a close look. To see so many sea turtles in one area is a once in a lifetime experience.

Two reef sharks swim past scuba divers off San Salvador in the Bahamas. San Salvador is the island that many believe was the first place that Columbus landed in the New World. As you watch this video remember, sharks are ambush predators and it is the one you do not see that will get you.

This North American box turtle has claimed a back yard in Tennessee as his own. It is frequently seen roaming through the grass behind a house in a quiet neighbourhood. They are beautiful creatures that prefer to stay in small areas, not roaming far from home. They commonly live more than 40 years, with unverified claims being made that some have reached 100 years of age. Box turtles have a domed shell and a hinge on their lower carapace, allowing them to close their shell tightly to avoid being attacked by predators. They feed on snails, insects, berries, fungi, slugs, worms, flowers, fish, frogs, salamanders, various rodents, snakes, birds, eggs, and other vegetation. They have even been known to feed on carrion such as roadkill. In their younger years, these turtles are largely carnivorous. As they grow in age, they feed more on plants. Because these turtles are highly attractive, they are threatened by over harvesting for pet trade. Despite their appeal, these turtles are difficult to care for and do not make good pets.

Its camera captures the fading light as the sun dips below the horizon, casting brilliant hues of orange, pink, and purple across the sky. Wisps of fog drift through the golden light, creating an ethereal glow. The drone glides steadily, framing the misty landscape with rolling hills barely visible through the haze. The farm landscape stretches out with golden fields, lush green pastures. The sun casts long shadows and paints the sky with rich colors. It's such a peaceful, cinematic scene, and capturing it with a drone adds a mesmerizing, sweeping perspective.

A hiker walking through a quiet section of forest heard a large tree falling over, followed by a commotion in the trees ahead of him. Knowing it must be a large animal, he cautiously stepped ahead and recorded what turned out to be a full-sized beaver that had just cut down a poplar tree. The beaver quickly chewed off the top branch and began dragging it through the clearing. The hiker followed behind as the beaver waddled all the way down a path and right to a pond. Swimming across the water, the beaver dragged the branch over to the lodge. As the hiker discovered, the beaver had a family at the pond. Two adult and three young beavers were also swimming around, busily working on gathering food and adding to their lodge.

That was so dramatic yet so hilarious!

But these curious penguins are among a unique population that lives in the northern hemisphere in the Galapagos Islands. They are the only species of penguin that does live north of the equator. The Galapagos Islands exist where four strong ocean currents converge. The Humboldt current brings cold water with low salinity to the islands. These waters and lower temperatures make it possible for penguins to thrive here. Salemas and sardines also thrive here, providing the penguins with an abundance of food. These swimmers were delighted to have the birds swim around them and up to them as they inspected the clumsy humans. Penguins are incredibly agile in the water, making it easy for them to dart all around the swimmers with ease.

But when large sharks swim directly at a diver to inspect them with curiosity, it is still a very intimidating experience that can send chills down the spine of even the most experienced diver. These hammerheads and Galapagos sharks gather in the waters around Darwin Island. They come here for the abundant fish that are brought by the strong currents that converge here. Hammerheads congregate in huge schools, swimming lazily in the current by day and hunting actively by night. Scuba divers come here to see these formidable predators in great numbers. Sitting on the rocks, divers are treated to a live show that would rival even the most vivid Imax theatre production.

Whale sharks and hammerheads congregate here, giving nature enthusiasts one of the best shows in the world. After finishing a dive, this scuba diver encountered a pod of dolphins cruising past. When they sighted him, they turned and came close to inspect him curiously. Swimming with dolphins in the wild is an unforgettable experience.

The Arenui liveaboard is the most beautiful scuba liveaboard in the world. Its home is Indonesia where it navigates the waters around some of the world's most breathtaking islands. This voyage took a group of Canadian scuba divers to Komodo to meet manta rays, sea turtles, fish of all colours, and sharks. The guests even ventured onto land to come face to face with Komodo dragons, the world's biggest and most ferocious lizards. Famous for their ability to take down animals much larger, they are a sight to behold. The waters in Indonesia are a dazzling blue. The landscape is spectacular. It is only fitting that this is where the Arenui spends its time. Known as a boutique liveaboard, the complete experience on this boat is perfect. From the sights to the service, the food to the accommodations, no detail is overlooked. The Arenui is a traditional Phinisi – a classic Indonesian wooden sailing vessel. Constructed of seven species of wood and finished expertly, the boat itself is magnificent. Reminiscent of an old-fashioned pirate ship, the wood masts and sails are majestic and beautiful. The Arenui was built in July 2007. The main hull was crafted from ironwood by over 50 local craftsmen in South Sulawesi. The boat structure was built in Java and Bali. Copper and brass accents add to the warmth and appeal of the bedrooms on this boat. As the Arenui makes its way from one dive site to another, other boats full of tourists stop to allow them to take pictures and videos. The boat is so beautiful that they simply cannot resist. With sails billowing, a drone circled this boat and took video from a higher perspective. It is hard to imagine how any boat anywhere could be so beautiful. The scuba diving is enough to bring guests back to Indonesia. The Arenui is the best way to experience the best that Indonesia has to offer.

Blue footed boobies are one of the most recognizable and iconic animals in the Galapagos Islands. They get their name due to the distinctive blue feet that are a result of their diet. Boobies fly low over the ocean in flocks, looking for schooling fish feeding near the surface. When they spy a school below, they all tuck in their wings and make a coordinated dive to capture a mouthful of fish. The synchronized dive makes it nearly impossible for baitfish to avoid all of the beaks at once. The Galapagos Islands are home to some of the most diverse and unique animals on the planet. These birds make their home on Santa Cruz Island near the neighbouring Island, Baltra. They perch on the cliffs and rocks along the shore, building their nests close to the water's edge. As soon as they are old enough to fly, they look for their food in the waves nearby. Boobies get their name from the original term, "Bobo" that was used to describe them. Bobo means "clown" and refers to their apparent lack of intelligence.

Papua New Guinea is a group of islands that form a country near Australia. It is a remote and beautiful land, full of mystery. One of these mysteries surrounds the wreck of a Japanese Zero that sank on December 26th, 1943. Tomiharu Honda left the air base in West New Britain on a mission over Kimbe Bay. Neither Honda or his fighter plane ever returned to the base. Sixty years after Honda's final mission, Papua New Guinea fisherman, William Nui, was freediving for sea cucumbers. He saw the shadow of the plane in the water deep beneath him. A superstitious man, Nui was frightened by the image and believed he had seen the outstretched arms of a ghostly figure. He summoned the courage to dive deeper and take a better look. Nui saw that the shape was a wrecked fighter plane. Nui told the story of what he had found and word made it to Max Benjamin, the owner of Walindi Dive Resort. Walindi is partnered with the Febrina liveaboard. Max dove on the wreck and made careful observations. He found the throttle in the off position and the flap controls set to reduce the airspeed of the plane. This suggested the plane had run out of fuel and that Honda must have intentionally coasted in for a water landing, a dangerous gamble, with water landings resulting in disaster more than 80 per cent of the time. Honda had skillfully guided his plane to a spot in Kimbe Bay close to shore. Managing to bring the plane to a stop undamaged, Honda was able to swim to shore as it sank. But it seems that Honda's troubles did not end when he reached the island. Max Benjamin recorded the serial number of the plane. He found no visible signs of damage from combat. Max checked archives and historical records, finding that Honda had been considered missing in battle. He had never found his way back to Japanese territory. Accounts of villagers suggest that Honda had made his way to Talasea, a nearby village and that he was helped back to his base. This is contradicted by wartime records. Local legend tells us that Honda might have hidden out in the jungle for the rest of his life, ashamed to return and admit that he had lost a plane as a result of being lost and running out of fuel. A darker tale involves Honda being eaten by a tribe of cannibals on one of the islands. Honda's true fate will never be known. His plane is slowly being covered by sponges and coral as time passes. It serves as a fascinating and mysterious site for scuba divers. The F.V. Febrina and it's Captain, Alan Raabe take their Kimbe Bay tours to this site.
