An armed suspect was shot by police returning fire early Tuesday morning during an attempted break-in, Metro Nashville Police Department says.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Knykholas Lane, allegedly tried breaking into the apartment of his estranged girlfriend and mother of his child in the Napier housing area. Metro Police add that Lane is a domestic violence fugitive.

Officers were called to Lewis Street around 1 a.m. Tuesday to find Lane. MNPD Officer Eric Ziegler, the first responding officer to this incident, saw Lane running close to a driveway in the Napier homes area.

Officer Ziegler, who arrived in a marked police SUV, commanded Lane to "come here," but Lane allegedly fired his semi-automatic pistol at this time.

Officer Ziegler then returned fire. No officers were hurt, but Lane was shot twice: Once in his leg and once in his buttocks.

He is currently being treated at Vanderbilt Hospital for gunshot wounds.

Last Thursday, Metro Police say Lane punched his ex-girlfriend twice in the face and "held her against her will in a bedroom" before he ran off.

Lane was issued arrest warrants charging him with false imprisonment and domestic assault for this alleged assault last Thursday. His estranged girlfriend also obtained an order of protection.

Lane was convicted on two counts of aggravated burglary in March 2023 and was given a three-year sentence to be served on supervised probation. He was arrested on a probation violation warrant Tuesday, Nov. 12, two days before the alleged domestic assault.
