On September 19, 2024, Deputy Robert Henderson arrived at a home in Leoni Township to arrest 41-year-old James Mitchell Kerr, on a felony warrant for violating probation and two misdemeanor warrants. Kerr was on a riding lawnmower when Deputy Henderson started speaking with him. Kerr ignored Deputy Robert Henderson’s commands to stop, accelerating his mower before coming to a ditch. The situation escalated when Kerr retrieved a handgun hidden on the mower, prompting the deputy to deploy a Taser.

As Kerr was tased, he discharged his weapon, shooting himself in the hand. Backup officers arrived shortly after, taking Kerr into custody and transporting him to the hospital for treatment before his transfer to jail. Kerr now faces multiple charges, including assault with intent to murder and resisting arrest, with his case advancing to trial in Jackson County Circuit Court. The Michigan State Police conducted an independent investigation, which cleared Deputy Henderson of any policy violations.
