“Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’”

(Matthew 25:37-40)

Although we haven’t yet celebrated the great American holiday of Thanksgiving, Christmas looms. This past weekend I heard my first holiday song of the year. A perennial favorite is “Joy to the World”.

If you believe, as all Catholics should, that that “Joy” is Jesus Christ and that we celebrate the Good News of God’s Kingdom entering into humanity, then how do we play our part in spreading the joy? If we are tempted to describe as “suffering” the endless loop recording of tacky holiday songs after we have broken down the doors of a big box store in a stampede of avarice for the 72” smart tv, then we should remind ourselves of those in distant lands who also stampede but who do so without a trace of greed, for their fervent wish on December 25th and for too many days of the year is for rice, clean water, medicine, and shelter. How best to respond to Jesus’s call to care for the less fortunate? Here to help us answer that question in Michele Sagarino, president of
Cross Catholic Outreach. Michelle will describe her organization’s Christmas outreach, the Box of Joy program, one designed to bring Christ and His Yuletide “Joy” to those in need around the world.
