OP2411-16-3
3rd Battalion, Chernarus 33rd Separate Mountain Motorized Rifle Brigade, received a warning order from 33rd Brigade operations staff that separatists were driving for the village of Behnsdorf in Werferlingen.
A task force was assembled which included three BTR rifle squads, two T-72 tanks, one BRDM Scout car. On the road march to Behnsdorf, Tank 1 and Tank 2 encountered a pair of BMP infantry fighting vehicles, which were destroyed by friendly tank gunfire.
The tactical plan for the defense of Behnsdorf was for all three BTR rifle squads to occupy the northern edge of the village, with the two T-72 tanks to deploy on the east side and the west side of the town.
The enemy attacked with mostly heavy tracked armor, including T-62 tanks. Within 10 minutes, both task force tanks were destroyed, as enemy heavy tracked armor closed in to the town. Enemy tanks also had destroyed all three BTRs and inflicted heavy casualties on friendly infantry.
By the time the task force commander decided to pull back deeper into town, most of the task force was very nearly destroyed. Relief forces including one T-72 tank and a BTR rifle squad, arriving south of town, were employed by the task force commander to cover the withdrawal of the remnants of the infantry. Both of those vehicles were destroyed along with the infantry.
Casualties were nearly catastrophic. Command Squad was wiped out. 2nd Squad lost six including its BTR and 3rd Squad lost five, also including its BTR. Relieving Squad 1 was completely destroyed. Both T-72 tanks were destroyed.
Field counts of enemy losses included three BMP infantry fighting vehicles, and two BRDM scout cars.
The task force commander and operations staff for 3rd Battalion were completely unprepared to encounter the enemy T-62 tanks, which caused great damage. The tactics in defending Behnsdorf under such conditions were completely inadequate to the task. The task force infantry should have been deployed on the southern edge of the village, using the village as cover and relying on infantry antitank means to destroy marauding enemy armor.
3rd Battalion operations staff has recommended reinforcing the task force with an additional BTR rifle Squad and an additional tank.
