HEADBANGERS BALL – EP 81 – "20 Years Without the Legend: Remembering Dime…"

Hey there Headbangers, SGT Rock here and we here at Hill 30 and Blue Falcon Productions have a very special Headbangers Ball for you. 20 years ago. One of the worst days of my life was 08 December 2004. The news had come down that Pantera/Damageplan legend, Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott had lost his life from an act of senseless violence along with three others, Damageplan bodyguard Jeff Thompson, 40; fan Nathan Bray, 23; and Erin Halk, 29, who worked at the club; the Alrosa Villa. Officer James Niggemeyer arrived on scene where he observed one victim and the shooter holding a hostage by the neck. At that point, Officer James Niggemeyer gunned that fucker with a shotgun blast to the face. Saving the hostage and ending the carnage.

In the aftermath, millions of metal fans, me included, cried. I was inconsolable. I’d seen Pantera live, I’d seen Dime onstage, seeing Dime multiple times while stationed in Germany and stateside. One show that stood out with me was while I was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, I was able to not only meet Dime, Phil, Rex, and Vinny, I got to party with them. And now, one of most beautiful souls on the planet, was taken from me. The rage I felt, the holes I’d put into walls at my band’s practice spot.

I called my BrotherfromanotherMother and we linked up at my then band’s practice spot I had rented in a storage unit facility. We opened the door, cranked up the PA up to 11, and put all my Pantera CDs into my CD player and hit the “roam” button. We sat there pounding Black Toothed Grins, Jäger, Cuervo, and German Bier. All the while, more and more bands that practiced at this compound began to show up and we turned it into a celebration while mourning Dime at the same time. We don’t know what he’d want, a moment of silence or a moment of fuckin loudness. We did both.

Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott touched so many lives, inspired so many musicians, motivated and brought folks from the brink. That was Dime. To this day as we celebrate a legend, never forget who took him from us. The devil did. The devil got into the mind of a madman and when our band played shows, we had a standing rule with the venue, “No one and we mean not one fuckin body comes onto the stage unless they’re a part of our inner circle or other bands on the bill! We took what happened to Dime seriously."

And our fans respected our wishes. And we love them to this fuckin day for it.
