A rare 10-foot oarfish, dubbed the “doom fish” for its mythical link to disasters, was discovered on a beach in Encinitas, California, marking the second sighting in the state this year.

Oarfish, deep-sea dwellers found up to 3,300 feet below the surface, are rarely seen and remain largely unstudied.

Their legendary status as predictors of earthquakes gained attention after numerous oarfish appeared before Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Scientists suggest shifts in ocean conditions may explain recent sightings, including a 12-foot oarfish spotted earlier this year in La Jolla Cove, NBC News has reported.
