CONGONHAS, WHERE YOU FIND ALEIJADINHO'S MASTERPIECE!

In this video we visit the city of Congonhas which is one of the few cities in the route from Belo Horizonte to visit the colonial cities from the gild rush era. Congonhas is a small town, but it has a oot of significance because it is home to what is believed to be the masterpiece of the famous Brazilian sculptor and architecture Aleijadinho. That's why we absolutely wanted to visit this city and also the site that is called Santuário do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos (or in English: Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos). This place is absolutely remarkable and has some of the best works of Aleijadinho. The site is located on a hill and on top there is a church with 12 statues in front of it which Aleijadinho called them the 12 prophets and also there are 6 chapels at the bottom below the church which basically are representatives of the 6 passages of Christ through his crucifixion. There is also a huge religious ceremony that takes place at this site every year and attracts almost 100,000 visitors to the city. That's why very close to site where the Santuário do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matosinhos is located, you also have a compound called Romaria which is where the poor people who wanted to participate in the religious ceremony would stay during that period. Now it has turned into a cultural centre. We also visited the Museum of Congonhas which is really interesting and we highly recommend that you visit it if you go to Congonhas.
