[053] Bushmills Prohibition Recipe

Did you watch the series Peaky Blinders? If you did, you most likely saw Tommy Shelby in the bar enjoying some Bushmills. As it turns out, Bushmills was one of the few Irish whisky distillers that successfully made it through the Prohibition Era. To honor that, and to make the show as "close to real life" as possible, Bushmills dusted off their Prohibition Era recipe and created a special edition whisky.

As I understand it, this whisky is essentially (or very close to) the same as what is used in today's Bushmills White. However, the Prohibition Era is 92 proof vs. 80 proof, and it's non-chill filtered. Other than that, both are blends of single malt and grain whiskies and both are aged at least 3 years (although I have seen reports that the Prohibition Recipe is a blend of 3, 4, and 5 year whiskies).

Sadly, the Prohibition Recipe is no longer available, and hasn't been for quite some time. I was lucky enough to find a bottle when I lived on the east coast, and I'm very glad to have picked it up. It wasn't expensive, either. As I recall, I was able to get the bottle for right around, or maybe a little under, $50.

Honestly - if this whisky was still widely available, I'd seriously consider this as a possible "everyday sip." To me and my blue-collar palate, it's just that good. If you're lucky enough to come across a bottle, pick it up. And if you don't like it - let me know, I'll buy it from you!
