THE PIZZA BOMBER: BRIAN WELLS (REAL LIFE SAW)
The story of Brian Wells, known as the "Pizza Bomber," is one of the most bizarre and complex criminal cases in recent history. On August 28, 2003, Brian Wells, a 46-year-old pizza delivery driver in Erie, Pennsylvania, walked into a PNC Bank with a bomb strapped around his neck. He handed the teller a note demanding $250,000. This marked the beginning of a harrowing and intricate sequence of events that would baffle investigators for years.
Wells had been sent on a seemingly ordinary delivery to a remote location, only to find himself at the mercy of several conspirators. These individuals forced him to wear the bomb, claiming it would detonate if he did not comply with their demands. With the bomb ticking, Wells was given a complex set of instructions to follow in a macabre scavenger hunt intended to secure his release.
After leaving the bank with a bag containing a fraction of the demanded money, Wells was apprehended by police in a nearby parking lot. As officers awaited the bomb squad, the device exploded, killing Wells. The entire incident was captured on live television, shocking viewers and raising countless questions.
The investigation revealed a tangled web of conspirators, including Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, a woman with a history of mental illness and criminal activity, and Kenneth Barnes, a former television repairman. Diehl-Armstrong, who was the mastermind behind the plot, intended to use the stolen money to pay Barnes to kill her father. The investigation also uncovered the involvement of William Rothstein, a handyman with a high IQ, who had assisted in the construction of the bomb.
The case took years to unravel, with many twists and turns along the way. Diehl-Armstrong and Barnes were eventually convicted and sentenced to prison. Despite the convictions, questions linger about the full extent of each participant's involvement and the exact sequence of events leading up to Wells' death.
The "Pizza Bomber" case stands as a chilling reminder of the lengths to which some will go in pursuit of their twisted goals. It highlights the complexity of human motives and the dark potential for manipulation and coercion. The legacy of Brian Wells' tragic end continues to captivate and confound those who delve into this extraordinary criminal saga.
