The Bridge: 11th November 2024 - Part 2

There are only 3 road bridges over the railway line in Cambridge. The bridge on Mill Road is one of them. Cambridge County Counci, in conjunction with the GCP (Greater Cambridge Partnership), have been attempting to close this bridge to traffic while pretending to Cambridge residents the closure will actually ease congestion in Cambridge for a while now. They have been promised £4 million in funding from central government if they do this one thing. Thanks to a FOI by people opposed to the bridge being shut, it seems this promise was made before the public consultation actually took place.
There is a legal process that is still ongoing, but the Council and the GCP have jumped the gun and decided to start work on the infrastructure to close the bridge anyway. At least they are trying to but unfortunately for them, a group of protestors has so far managed to keep the workmen at bay with their entirely peaceful blocking of the intended work area.
