Life in War: When Bombs Become Routine
In this video, the second part of my two-part documentary about my journey to Donetsk, I share my experiences and observations about life in a city scarred by over a decade of war. As I walk through the streets and talk to locals, I witness firsthand the challenges they face daily—whether it’s the lack of basic resources like water or the constant reminder of the conflict surrounding them. This journey gave me a deep insight into the resilience and strength of the people living in this war zone, and I want to share that with you.
One of the most striking realities I encountered was how much life in Donetsk revolves around water. It’s a scarce resource that people have learned to use sparingly. I watched residents rushing to fill their containers whenever water became available—a precious window in their daily routines. Neighbors support each other, sharing what little they have. This sense of community is remarkable, even under such difficult circumstances.
While exploring the city, I couldn’t ignore the deteriorating infrastructure. Buildings that have been neglected for years are crumbling; some appear as though they’ve been struck by missiles but are simply abandoned. Roads are in poor condition, and public services are heavily limited. However, there are small signs of progress. I noticed improvements in the banking systems, making it easier for residents to access their funds and pay their bills—a small but significant step toward normalcy.
Life in a war zone also takes a heavy psychological toll, which I experienced firsthand. The sudden explosions and the whistling sounds of air defense systems were terrifying. The constant state of fear that people here have grown accustomed to is hard to comprehend.
Despite these harsh conditions, there are moments of hope. I visited a restored park where children played and families gathered—a poignant reminder that life continues even in the darkest times.
Every time I return to my hometown of Donetsk, I am reminded of the strength and endurance of its people. They are truly admirable. I hope these videos provide you with insight into their lives and the incredible resilience they show in the face of ongoing conflict.
