State House Representative Walks Away After a Decade Serving as a Democrat

In 2023, North Carolina State Representative ​⁠Tricia Cotham walked away from the Democrat Party, after previously serving as a Democrat state representative for 10 years. Here’s what she had to say about it:

“This is something I thought long and hard about. I previously served for ten years as a Democrat, then took a break and came back and noticed big changes in the Democrat Party—like giving me flack for displaying our nation’s flag or referencing my faith or supporting 2A rights. Those might seem minor, but they’re out-of-sync with our American values and my own.
My Democrat colleagues have called for my resignation and paid for ads to attack me and my children. So I #WalkAway.”
