John Thune was elected majority leader of a Republican-controlled Senate on Wednesday, succeeding Mitch McConnell.

Known for his friendly, traditional Midwestern persona, Thune won a tight race against Senators John Cornyn and Rick Scott, with Trump allies backing Scott.
