Why did the Baltimore Ravens struggle to land a safety in 2024?

The Baltimore Ravens defense, which was the NFL's best in 2023 under defensive lineman Mike McDonald, has taken a major step back in 2024.

In general, top defenses rarely maintain their excellence from season to season, but Baltimore's defensive struggles this year feel especially extreme.

After McDonald left to coach the Seattle Seahawks, the Ravens promoted Zach Orr to defensive lineman status. Orr is competent, but flaws have become apparent in his development.

The 2023 Ravens have been successful in several defensive metrics, leading the league in fewest runs conceded, defensive efficiency, yards per game, and blocks attempted.

However, as of 2024, they rank just 16th in DVOA with guards, have allowed the third-most points in the NFL, and have struggled in pass defense.

Their biggest issues have been poor response to zone coverage and a lack of regular turnovers, which has led to big plays and blown coverages.

Veteran defensive back Marlon Humphrey has openly criticized the lack of commitment and emphasized the need to regain the discipline and focus of last season.

Orr's scheme lacks the flexibility that McDonald brought. Guards are more predictable, with less stealth and post-snap switches, making it easier for opponents to exploit their weaknesses.

The change in team has also reduced the pass rush, with players like Odafe Oweh and Kyle Van Noy doing their best to fill the hole left by the retired Jadeveon Clowney.

The Ravens defense needs to improve quickly if they want to make a run at the Super Bowl because they can't rely on a high-scoring offense led by Lamar Jackson to carry the team.

Turning a defense around will be difficult, but Orr and his coaches will need to address these issues during the season if they want to have a chance at postseason success.
