The Redwing: Close Up HD Footage (Turdus iliacus)

The Redwing is a small thrush that's a common winter visitor to the UK. These birds are about the size of a Song Thrush and are easily spotted by their most striking features – a bold cream stripe above the eye and bright orangey-red patches on their sides, just under their wings. That's actually how they got their name!
During winter, you'll often see them in gardens and parks, searching for berries and worms. They typically arrive from their breeding grounds in Scandinavia and Russia around October, when it gets too cold up there. Redwings usually move about in flocks, and you might spot them with their cousins, the Fieldfares.
At night, you can sometimes hear them passing overhead, making a distinctive 'tseep' call. They're quite shy birds, though, and will quickly fly off if you get too close. While most head back north in spring, a few pairs do stay to breed in Scotland.
