11/7/2024 USS Buncombe LST-510, named after Buncombe County, North Carolina. Nicknamed the “Five & Dime” and the “Woolworth Ship” by her sailors, she participated in the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach. She is now part of the Cross Sound Ferry, transporting passengers and vehicles from Orient Point New York to New London, Connecticut under her new name, Cape Henlopen. At over 80 years old she’s still looking good
