Psalm 69: Down in the Deep Blues
** Psalm 69 is one of David's most intense laments, written from a place of overwhelming hardship and deep sorrow. David is pursued by enemies who hate him without cause, scorned by those around him, and feels abandoned even by his own family. Yet, in his suffering, he turns to God with a heart that longs for deliverance. This psalm captures his raw cries for help, profound desperation, and unwavering hope in God's faithfulness and mercy. Though weighed down by physical and emotional pain, David remains anchored in trust, confident that God will hear him and deliver him from the depths of despair.
Psalm 69 foreshadows the sufferings of Jesus, who also experienced mockery, rejection, and betrayal. The psalm's themes of unjust suffering and redemption resonate deeply with believers facing trials. In this blues rendition, "Down in the Deep," the song captures David's profound journey through sorrow, hope, and ultimate trust, bringing the timeless message of Psalm 69 to life.
Psalm 69 (WEB)
For the Chief Musician. To the tune of "Lilies." By David.
1 Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck!
2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold.
I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
3 I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry.
My eyes fail looking for my God.
4 Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head.
Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty.
I have to restore what I didn't take away.
5 God, you know my foolishness.
My sins aren't hidden from you.
6 Don't let those who wait for you be shamed through me, Lord Yahweh of Armies.
Don't let those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, God of Israel.
7 Because for your sake, I have borne reproach.
Shame has covered my face.
8 I have become a stranger to my brothers,
an alien to my mother's children.
9 For the zeal of your house consumes me.
The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
10 When I wept and I fasted, that was to my reproach.
11 When I made sackcloth my clothing,
I became a byword to them.
12 Those who sit in the gate talk about me.
I am the song of the drunkards.
13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, Yahweh, in an acceptable time.
God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
14 Deliver me out of the mire, and don't let me sink.
Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters.
15 Don't let the flood waters overwhelm me,
neither let the deep swallow me up.
Don't let the pit shut its mouth on me.
16 Answer me, Yahweh, for your loving kindness is good.
According to the multitude of your tender mercies, turn to me.
17 Don't hide your face from your servant,
for I am in distress. Answer me speedily!

** Lyrics for "Down in the Deep"
(Verse 1)
Save me, Lord, I'm down in the deep,
Waters rise, my soul can't keep.
In the mire, no ground below,
Floods overflow, got nowhere to go.
(Chorus)
Oh, down in the deep, calling Your name,
Drowning in shame, but I know You'll make a way.
I've seen the darkness, felt the sting,
But I trust in Your love, Your sheltering wing.
(Verse 2)
My eyes are tired, my throat runs dry,
Cried so long, all tears run dry.
Enemies gather, more than I can see,
They hate without cause, and they're coming for me.
(Chorus)
Oh, down in the deep, calling Your name,
Drowning in shame, but I know You'll make a way.
I've seen the darkness, felt the sting,
But I trust in Your love, Your sheltering wing.
(Verse 3)
"Reproach has broken my heart," I say,
Waiting for comfort that never came my way.
Poisoned my bread, vinegar in my cup,
But You're my Savior, so I won't give up.
(Bridge)
"For the zeal of Your house consumes my soul,"
They mock me, Lord, but I won't fold.
Let the floodwaters roar, let the tempters cry,
But I'm holding on to You until I die.
(Outro)
"Let heaven and earth, and the seas give You praise,"
For You'll lift me up, bring me out of the grave.
Down in the deep, but I know You're near,
In the darkest night, Your love shines clear.
